Very excited to see The Institution of Structural Engineers shining a light on some of the incredible concrete reuse work being done at the Structural Xploration Lab, EPFL by Corentin Fivet, Célia Küpfer, Maléna Bastien Masse, and the wider team! The paper gives an overview of three projects the team have undertaken to prove the technical potential for reclaiming and reusing concrete walls and floors in a new life. They are: 🌉 a post tensioned arch footbridge made from 25 small blocks that had been cut from a wall (~60 lower carbon than the new equivalent*); 🏢 a 30m² area of office floor made from an old slab and old steel beams both scheduled for demolition (~90% lower carbon); ☔ a community pavilion made from 3D assemblies containing both column and slab. I remember when we published a paper by Michał P. Drewniok in 2020 about Steel Reuse, David Leversha said something like "it just seemed obvious that we should be doing this on every project now". Four years later, and thanks to the work of Penny Gowler, Laura Batty and many others, the London reclaimed steelarket is booming. Could we see reclaimed concrete follow suit...? Great work EPFL!! Thermal expansion of metal cladding I found important to explain users how to install metal panels on external walls in a right and easy way, aluminium composite ALPOLIC in particular. What are the main mistakes made on building site: - Not enough gap between panels - Fasteners fixed to deep and restraining the panel - Bad positioning of sliding points and fixed points - Wrong hole diameter for fixed and sliding points - Panel too big for horizontal layout These mistakes can have negative effect on long term: - « Waves » can appear on panels surface which leads to dissatisfied architect/owner - Installers can be asked to remove and replace the panels - Panel can fall down due to fasteners failure and strong wind - Panel is under stress which can lead to corrosion/delamination It is important to follow the recommendations during panel fabrication to make installation easier. Good preparation gives quality result. Advantages of the Unit System The unit system has significant advantages in design and construction, primarily in the following aspects: Simplified Installation Process: The connection between the unit water trough and the vertical material does not require cutting the contact area. Instead, screws are directly inserted from the top of the water trough into the screw holes of the vertical material, ensuring stable fixation. Reduced Processing Complexity: This connection method reduces the complexity of processing, streamlining the construction process and improving work efficiency. Aluminum Material Savings: By avoiding the need to cut the legs of the vertical frame, the amount of aluminum required for the horizontal beam is decreased, effectively saving costs. Optimized Sealing Performance: During the insertion of the vertical male-female framework, sealing is achieved by connecting the third wall of the vertical frame with the second wall of the water trough, eliminating issues related to cutting the unit male material and ensuring overall sealing integrity. Design of Singly Reinforced Sections. The beams in a structure are deliberately kept as singly reinforced sections (unless any architectural issue hinders it) by designers as they show high ductility and also easy to design. The limiting Moment of Resistance is calculated using manual methods (Excel Sheets) of different section sizes and then the sections are modelled in the Analysis softwares. The analysis Moments due to factored loads and appropriate load combinations are thus obtained and ensured that they are lower than limiting Moment of Resistance. The section is thus designed as Singly Reinforced Section and Ast is obtained using Excel Sheets. 50 square meters demonstrates the benefits of using conventional and natural waste materials in a structural capacity, exploring long term sequestration of carbon rich materials into buildings using traditional biomaterials such as straw, wood or hemp, earth and adobe, waste fibres, bamboo, recycled steel, plastics and foam, while minimizing the use of virgin wood composites and frames or the excessive use of steel reinforced concretes and Portland cements. The approach exemplifies the combination of earth and or biomass or waste derived conventional materials contained in a mesh reinforcing cage of steel/plastic/wood or bamboo. Easily assembled and arrayed into a building envelope and structurally completed by applying a choice of thin surface finishes in earth/mud/masonry parging or by simply attaching wood/bamboo and or sheeting directly or in combinations onto the completed assemblies. The core materials, reinforcement cages, ease of assembly and applied structural finishes creates amazingly elegant and deeply structural integrity without the need for additional post and beam or types of mixed structural and curtain envelope approaches. The modular form of the bricks blocks and panels inherently supports an unprecedented level of engineering and design flexibility that accommodates an ever greater range of architectural functions and services.
