In many projects, we often see beam-to-column connections where the beam meets a wide-flange column at a very steep angle. Detailers can address this common situation using various well-known methods. Some of these are shown on p. 3-40 of “Detailing for Steel Construction,” a great resource for U.S. steel detailing. However, design drawings sometimes show two beams framing the same face of the column. In the worst case for steel fabricators and erectors, these beams frame into the column's webs. In such cases, it is hard to keep the bolts inside the column and maintain the required eccentricity for a "conventional shear plate." Installation clearances force us to move the bolts outward. We extend the shear plate, but it makes the bolts less effective. In the example below, we were told to use three vertical rows of bolts due to the significant shear plate extension. This allowed the erector to tighten the bolts but introduced another installation issue. Due to geometric constraints, the erector couldn’t swing the beam into position. The solution was to drop the beam from above and field-weld the moment flange plate. I agree that free-form architecture requires skewed beams in modern buildings. However, the connection and installation costs can be high. In this case, it might be worth considering upsizing and rotating the column. This would place the skewed connections on the flange, not the web. Also, choosing rectangular or round HSS as an alternative may seem practical. #construction #steeldetailing #steelfabrication

REINFORCEMENT Any material specified for use as a reinforcement to concrete must fullfil certain requirements if an economical structural member is to be constructed. These basic requirements are: - 1. Tensile strength. 2. Must be capable of achieving this tensile strength without undue strain. 3. Be of a material that can be easily bent to any required shape. 4.
