English for #Aviation is one of the areas of ESP where teachers may benefit from having some basic knowledge of aircraft and aviation. The language used by aviation learners is noticeably different from other professions, yet many of us may encounter these terms while traveling without fully understanding their meanings. Aviation language might seem straightforward at first glance, but it certainly requires prior knowledge to teach it effectively.

Radiotelephony is a critical part of aviation safety. 🟧 When we talk about ‘Aviation English,’ we generally focus on training and testing for non-native English speakers. However, the ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements apply to *all* pilots and air traffic controllers, regardless of whether they are native or non-native English speakers. 🟧 The ATPG Skytalk group (co-chaired by me and Veronica Zunic) has published a Paper (https://lnkd.in/gCChp76H) which was recently presented to senior management at EASA. The Paper examines the role native English speakers play in safe, efficient Radiotelephony and makes recommendations for them to become better communicators, especially when interacting with non-native English speakers. 🟧 *Everyone* is expected to: ⚫ Stick to Standard Phraseology ⚫ Speak slowly ⚫ Speak clearly Unfortunately, this does not always happen. Why is that? How can people be persuaded to follow these simple practices in order to improve aviation safety? #aviationsafety #icao #faa #easa #communication #AviationEnglish #nativeEnglishspeakers
