Global manufacturing is facing a growing productivity paradox. While manufacturers are racing to capture retiring workers’ knowledge before they leave, using that knowledge with new technologies, including robotics, is becoming challenging because of a widening skills gap. Nowhere is that skills gap more apparent than on the shop floor, where workflows, often decades old, must be streamlined to keep manufacturers competitive. Robotics is helping manufacturers meet that challenge worldwide. It’s important to keep robotics in context, however, and see it as an enabling technology of a broader knowledge network every manufacturer needs to cultivate and grow if they’re going to survive and thrive in the 21st century. The future of work isn't about robots replacing us, it's about robots working alongside us. This is where upskilling the workforce becomes crucial. Let's delve deeper into this concept. Why Upskilling Matters: Imagine a scenario where automation takes over repetitive tasks on an assembly line. While some might fear job losses, this presents an opportunity. By upskilling the assembly line workers, we can equip them with the abilities to: • Manage and oversee robotic systems: This could involve programming robots, monitoring their performance, and troubleshooting any issues. • Focus on quality control and problem-solving: With robots handling repetitive tasks, human employees can dedicate their time to ensuring quality and identifying areas for improvement in the production process. • Embrace data analysis and interpretation: As automation generates a wealth of data, workers with data analysis skills can identify trends, optimize processes, and make data-driven decisions.
