Fiber optic sensing of subsea infrastructure is already happening. I wanted to summarize some highlights from the excellent talks from last week's workshop in Rio: Production Monitoring and Integrity •Well integrity can justify the cost of installation of fiber optic cables. •The sensitivity of #DAS to fluid processes is unmatched. It really can illuminate even the most subtle leak or fluid level in any annular space. •The value of fiber optic sensing in the upper completion of offshore wells is quite high. Even without fiber in the reservoir, operators are already making critical decisions on the operations of all types of devices like downhole safety valves, GLV, annular spaces, leaks, reduce flaring, etc. •First principles are critical for interpreting temperature and acoustic data provided by in-well fiber optics. We can automate certain detectors but the complex fluid dynamics in each wellbore require that careful analysis and integration with other measurements are taken into account to assess the various processes and understand the anomalies. High Definition Seismic •Higher resolution seismic provided by the fiber in the upper completion is greatly enhancing the understanding of the structural and time lapse features of the producing reservoirs. Both primary and converted wave imaging from DAS can illuminate the development zone and track 4D changes. SURF •We cannot have operating subsea assets without safe risers. Using fiber optic sensors we are detecting any anomaly in the structure of the riser itself hence preventing any catastrophic failure. •Submarine cables, whether they are along power or telecom, or subsea pipelines, are excellent instruments for seismic monitoring and can provide PP and PS data that is enhancing imaging capabilities of the subsurface. Data Management •Even though data rates for distributed sensors are high, there are multiple strategies and edge processing solutions to make the fiber diagnostics available to the end user. Whether there are dedicated FO for transmission or other cellular or satellite solutions, the right data diagnostic can get to the end user in real time. It was great to see so much data from our OptaSense, Silixa and #Hyperion instruments being showcased over so many presentations. Thanks to Petrobras and Society of Petroleum Engineers International #SPE for such a great and well attended event. I’m confident saying that we “are already making subsea monitoring happen”. Please send me a message if you want to chat about any of these topics. Bienor Melo LUNA Innovations #DTS

🌍 Bringing Innovation and Precision to Oilfield Sensor Data Transmission! In the oil and gas industry, gathering accurate pressure data from well sensors and reliably transmitting it to the surface is essential for optimizing production and ensuring safety. The industry employs several advanced methods for data transmission, each tailored to suit different well depths, costs, and environmental conditions. Here are some of the key methods: 1. Mud Pulse Telemetry: The most widely used method, this system sends pressure data through oscillations in the drilling fluid inside the drill pipes. With a strong reputation for reliability and cost-effectiveness, mud pulse telemetry remains the industry standard in deep and challenging wells. 2. Electromagnetic (EM) Telemetry: This approach uses low-frequency electromagnetic signals to transfer data through rock formations to the surface. EM telemetry can be ideal in scenarios where the fluid pulse method faces limitations, offering unique versatility in certain field conditions. 3. Fiber Optics: For real-time and high-resolution data, fiber optic cables are sometimes installed along the production tubing or well walls. Fiber optics provide a continuous stream of data with precision, making it suitable for advanced monitoring applications. 4. Electrical Cables: In some wells, compressed electrical cables transfer data directly from sensors to the surface. While requiring careful installation, this method supports constant communication and data flow, especially in challenging and deep well environments. As technology advances, fiber optics and EM telemetry are gaining traction for specific applications, especially in complex well structures like horizontal or extended-reach wells. Yet, mud pulse telemetry continues to be the workhorse of the industry, balancing efficiency, reliability, and cost. The choice of method depends on the project needs, well structure, and budget, but it’s clear that innovation in data transmission is pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in oilfield management. #OilAndGas #DataTransmission #Telemetry #Innovation #MudPulseTelemetry #FiberOptics #EMTelemetry #OilfieldTechnology

Day 1 of the Multibeam Acquisition Fundamentals (MBAF) Course is done. My fave moments in a training are when somebody's question leads me to bustin' out MS Paint and going offroading on a hand drawn explanation. See this absolute GEM below!! Can anybody guess what I was sketching about? I keep these ad hoc sketches and eventually turn them into prettier versions in my training material. This one's definitely a keeper. For Day 2, we're heading out on the boat to cement the teachings of Day 1. I'll be given attendees an example survey specification from the Offshore Renewables Market and will get them to set the sonar, vessel speed & line spacing to achieve it.

Thanks to all who attended the 2024 GoM Decommissioning Conference in Houston, TX, and made this the largest and most collaborative one yet. In the months leading up to the event I was challenged by some industry experts to ensure that we have some actionable items to take from this conference. So here are just a few that I captured: (links below) 1. Download the BSEE Safety App 2. Join ROICE (Repurposing of Offshore Infrastructure for Clean Energy) 3. Register in Petrobras' vendor system 4. Review IOGP whitepapers 5. Review The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine consensus study 6. Establish functional scopes of works to the supply chain (define the problem not the solution) 7. Start the rigs-to-reef permits as early as possible 8. 🏁 Done in milliseconds! Changing dates on your drill schedule should be instantaneous. ➕ Adding or dropping a rig to understand timing impact should take seconds. 🔁 Completely re-prioritizing by DSU while handling simops restrictions and updated price sets should happen immediately. Do you see the pattern? All of these changes should be ridiculously fast! If it takes minutes or even hours (!!!) to make simple tweaks and the impact on timing/production/economics, maybe it's time to learn how other operators already fixed their planning process with the Planner, and how you could too. Please message me for details! #oilandgas #planning #tech
