J. Andres Chavarria’s Post

Fiber optic sensing of subsea infrastructure is already happening. I wanted to summarize some highlights from the excellent talks from last week's workshop in Rio: Production Monitoring and Integrity •Well integrity can justify the cost of installation of fiber optic cables. •The sensitivity of #DAS to fluid processes is unmatched. It really can illuminate even the most subtle leak or fluid level in any annular space. •The value of fiber optic sensing in the upper completion of offshore wells is quite high. Even without fiber in the reservoir, operators are already making critical decisions on the operations of all types of devices like downhole safety valves, GLV, annular spaces, leaks, reduce flaring, etc. •First principles are critical for interpreting temperature and acoustic data provided by in-well fiber optics. We can automate certain detectors but the complex fluid dynamics in each wellbore require that careful analysis and integration with other measurements are taken into account to assess the various processes and understand the anomalies. High Definition Seismic •Higher resolution seismic provided by the fiber in the upper completion is greatly enhancing the understanding of the structural and time lapse features of the producing reservoirs. Both primary and converted wave imaging from DAS can illuminate the development zone and track 4D changes. SURF •We cannot have operating subsea assets without safe risers. Using fiber optic sensors we are detecting any anomaly in the structure of the riser itself hence preventing any catastrophic failure. •Submarine cables, whether they are along power or telecom, or subsea pipelines, are excellent instruments for seismic monitoring and can provide PP and PS data that is enhancing imaging capabilities of the subsurface. Data Management •Even though data rates for distributed sensors are high, there are multiple strategies and edge processing solutions to make the fiber diagnostics available to the end user. Whether there are dedicated FO for transmission or other cellular or satellite solutions, the right data diagnostic can get to the end user in real time. It was great to see so much data from our OptaSense, Silixa and #Hyperion instruments being showcased over so many presentations. Thanks to Petrobras and Society of Petroleum Engineers International #SPE for such a great and well attended event. I’m confident saying that we “are already making subsea monitoring happen”. Please send me a message if you want to chat about any of these topics. Bienor Melo LUNA Innovations #DTS

Thanks for sharing these interesting community-relevant insights. Was fiber staining and remediation a topic of interest also? Just curious.
