Finally a chance to ask all the questions you have about "co-design" in the #OceanDecade24 - What is it? Why do it? Where do I start?

We attended the GreenLatinos Summit last week in El Yunque National Forest--home to the Taíno native people of Puerto Rico and the only tropical rainforest that is part of the national forest system. The Summit was an opportunity for Latino/a/x (Latine) leaders from across the country to come together and share more about the work we are doing, learn new strategies, discuss opportunities for collaboration, and form lasting alliances. Latine communities are the second largest racial or ethnic group in the United States, after non-Hispanic whites. It is imperative for conservation groups to develop strategies that engage Latine communities in advocacy, organizing, and access efforts in order to build a stronger conservation movement. A few takeaways from the conference: *87% of Latine voters support a national goal of protecting 30% of America’s land and water by 2030. *92% of Latine voters support the protection of national parks and public lands. *Communities of color are three times more likely to live without access to natural areas compared to white communities in the U.S. For example 9/10 Latinos in the area surrounding Castner Range National Monument are nature deprived. *Decision making for public lands management happens through public processes that are primarily delivered in English, yet about 30% of Latines speak exclusively in English, and 71.1% speak a language other than English at home. On the eve of Earth Day, it is important to remember the early advocates of environmental stewardship. Most of us who grew up in central California are familiar with Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon National Parks. These three national parks, located on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, are world-famous for their natural beauty and unsurpassed vistas. People from all over the world trek thousands of miles to see the awe-inspiring beauty in our backyard. But what some people forget is that we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude for the existence of these parks to a Scottish-born naturalist who immigrated to America and became the foremost advocate for the preservation of the natural beauty of the United States.   John Muir was born on this date, April 21, 1838, in Dunbar, Scotland.  Raised in a devoutly religious family, Muir was a bit of a rebel, and retreated to enclaves of the natural world in Scotland to escape the formality and rigidity of the church. Muir’s family emigrated from Scotland in 1849, and settled in Wisconsin, where Muir began his life in America. He eventually migrated to the West Coast and became enamored with the natural beauty of the west. He wrote essays and articles about the importance of preserving the unparalleled beauty of Yosemite, and the power of his written words helped sway the U.S. Congress to set aside land for the future enjoyment of all Americans.    I love today’s quote from John Muir. I have tried to adopt this perspective for my own life. This quote speaks of empowerment, of the importance of attitude and perspective in realizing happiness and fulfillment.      #bornonthisday #bornonthisdate #johnmuir #yosemite #environmentalstewardship #naturalworld #science #attitude #perspective

It isn't just about saving reefs, it's about finding solutions that benefit both people and the planet. 🦸♀️ As a #STEMinist, one of the biggest takeaways for me was Dr. Lewis' commitment to empowering women with Sea Women of Melanesia Inc. He shared how by educating women, you're not just changing families but transforming entire societies - it reminded me that sometimes the most impactful change starts with the people closest to home. 🌏 Dr. Lewis also opened our eyes to the power of responsible #ecotourism with an emphasis on getting buy-in from local communities. It's clear that lasting change requires working together - with respect and a shared purpose. 💡His journey is a powerful reminder that local action CAN have a global impact, and that with #education and responsible planning, we can all be part of the solution. From Latin Rhythms Denmark we connect worlds via Latin Dance and eco-consciousness, Cultural Immersions, and Forest Protection - Ensuring the wellbeing of ecosystems, biodiversity, and people in the North and the South. The Waorani are an indigenous people of the Ecuadorian Amazon that occupy an ancestral territory estimated at approximately 800,000 hectares, located mainly between the Napo and Curaray rivers, in the provinces of Orellana, Napo and Pastaza. However, historically its original territory reached more than 2 million hectares before the expansion of extractive activities and the reduction due to external pressures. The Waorani population is currently estimated at between 2,000 and 2,500 people, organized into some 46 communities. Although they were traditionally semi-nomadic and hunter-gatherers, in recent decades they have adopted a more sedentary lifestyle due to contact with the outside world and the influence of religious missions and oil companies. Waorani territory includes Yasuní National Park, one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, and a critical region for global conservation. Within this park there are also groups in voluntary isolation such as the Tagaeri and Taromenane, who are part of the Waorani people but have chosen to live without contact with modern society. The Waorani territory and culture face serious challenges due to oil exploitation, which has contaminated their rivers, reduced their hunting areas, and affected the health of their population. Furthermore, the change in their cultural patterns, deforestation and illegal mining also threaten their way of life. The Waorani community has led historic legal battles. In 2019, they won a court ruling that suspended oil exploitation in 180,000 hectares of their territory, an important precedent in the defense of indigenous rights in Ecuador.
