A more connected, curious and compassionate UK is possible.

So many people I've spoken to in the last few days have been feeling angry, sad, overwhelmed by the race riots in the UK.
People like me who don't experience this violence against themselves, and are deeply distressed that this is being acted out in our communities. People like me who feel guilty for not doing more and are complicit in this being possible.
When big societal problems like this arise it can be totally overwhelming. And often we don't know what to do. I even found myself googling 'race riots, what can I do?' yesterday.
And yesterday was better. A movement of people coming together to stand against hate. But there is still so much to do.
So my advice to you (and to myself) is to start where you are, do what you can, because as soon as you start you are moving.
Some ideas:
- join the roots programme to talk with someone different to you
- volunteer locally to meet people outside your network and build new relationships
- give money if you can to people doing the work to combat racism (Hope not hate & Women for Refugee Women are two that spring to mind)
- sign petitions every day
- write to your MP
- join a march
What else? What will you do?

Strong recommendation to watch this documentary film on the loss of black cockatoos in Western Australia. Important to build awareness and understand the reasons for their decline and take action to reverse the loss.

In 1966 Manyara national park faced an impossible question, was culling the answer to its overcrowded elephant population?
Destruction of wildlife habitat and detrimental elephant behavior had to be addressed. Oxford Zooloogist Iain Douglas Hamilton received a grant to scientifically study the animals to find the alternative, whereby he lived with the elephants in the wild for nearly six years.
During that time he discovered the wonders of elephant behavior, building a relationship with elephant families while starting his own alongside theirs.
In 1972 Iain released a landmark thesis recommending corridors between habitats for animals, not culling.
Later, Iain pioneered the first elephant tracking collars to further study migration behaviors, and the the first aerial census as part of the monitoring.
The science and data Iain championed remains the bedrock of Save The Elephants work today, overcoming impossible threats to elephant and human coexistence—with science.
A new narrative for the organization is soon to be released in October. I’m proud to have dedicated over 1/2 a year of my life working on it.
The documentary below, developed by STE, sets the stage for the organization’s groundbreaking work, yesterday and today, in creating understanding for the significance of elephants.
The new narrative will address Africa’s greatest challenge today - the Human Elephant coexistence crisis. Right now Africa views elephants as its #1 problem. However, for its development, it’s people, and our sustainable future with nature, climate, and biodiversity, the crisis represents its greatest opportunity.
Now, more than ever, elephants need a voice in our changing world.

Well said.... It's just so frustrating the narrative of division gets so much more airspace.
