This year was and still is a special year for Hamburg. The reason? 35 years ago, in 1989, Hamburg and Osaka started their city partnership making them sister cities. As part of this celebration, we welcomed a delegation from Osaka to Hamburg this summer, including Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama. Japamburg used this opportunity to host an exclusive dialogue event between both towns and start-ups under the motto of "Business Opportunities for Start-ups". Participants from both Hamburg and Osaka presented their businesses and talked about the importance of each other's cities as part of their growth opportunities. And some of you may remember that this was already our second sister city dialogue between Hamburg and Osaka, with the first one taking place back in 2021. A heartfelt thank you to our partners in both cities who support these endeavors: Osaka International Business Promotion Center (IBPC Osaka), Handelskammer Hamburg, Hamburg Invest, and Impact Hub Hamburg, to name just a few.

Every company, and indeed every city, says they want innovation but most fear the change and the potential failure it may entail. Most importantly, in cultures like the United States, innovation is, by design, competitive, and inevitably becomes a win-lose proposition. (If you win, I lose, so I must “win”at all costs.) Lisboa (as the capital of Portugal is called in its native tongue) is different, by design. They set out more than a decade ago to create a welcoming, inclusive and supportive ecosystem which sought to attract entrepreneurs not only from all over Portugal, but from around the world. By any metric, Lisboa’s success has been validated many times over, most recently by winning the European Union’s “Capital of Innovation” award for 2024. This “Lisboa Ecosystem Guide” outlines the vision, the growth and the aspirations of the community. Here are a few excerpts which should serve as guideposts to other cities: “Collaboration and mutual support are at the core of this city where like-minded people and organizations come together to share their passion and vision.” “Our vision for the future of Lisboa is clear: a city that invests in authenticity, diversity, innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship as the driving forces propelling its development.” “This is a city that knows how to extend a warm welcome to those who choose it, valuing both its locals and those who arrive from afar, considering everyone part of the transformative talent within the city.” Parabens, Lisboa!

#Barcelona has strong natural appeal, and to a large extent, we thrive on it. Fortunately, we also have an outstanding base of talent from both top technical and non-technical universities, with experts across various fields. Young people are increasingly embracing entrepreneurial cultures like Silicon Valley’s, moving away from conservative, risk-averse mindsets and even challenging anti-business and degrowth voices, which have always been a vocal minority. Today, it’s possible to build #global startups from Barcelona. However, to maximize opportunities that retain talent, Barcelona needs to foster an appealing business environment too, reducing tax and bureaucratic barriers is key. Beyond good ideas and implementation capacity, the availability of capital is essential for scaling the #ecosystem. Shifting from the "culture of no" to a "culture of why not?" would already be a big step forward.

In my article published today in La Vanguardia, I outline the essential steps to make this vision a reality.🌍✨ 👉My thanks to Barcelona Global for the opportunity to write in La Vanguardia about two of the world’s most cosmopolitan, dynamic, and inspiring cities: San Francisco and Barcelona. 👉I am also grateful for the insights shared by entrepreneurs Kevin LOPEZ ALVAREZ, Ivana Llobet Leca, Maria Lence, Marta Cavestany, Pau Fernandez Guirao, Chiara Sanseverino, and Alexandre Cots Alcaniz; education professionals in Catalonia such as Estel Marín Cos; and representatives from public institutions driving innovation, including María Eugenia Marín Mínguez (Barcelona Activa), Xavier Trilla (ACCIÓ) and Ángel Panizo from Eurostat.

Aside from football, there is a perpetual rivalry between Barcelona and Madrid that can be healthy in many ways. There is no doubt that attracting international talent is crucial for any city in order to succed, and I do second the point in the article that states that the lingua franca in the Madrid start-up scene is Spanish; in Barcelona, it’s English. Fair to say also that Madrid has done a great job attracting a lot of latin american talent whilst Barcelona´s charm has always worked very well in attracting people from Europe and the USA. The existing research centres or business schools of a high standard are crucial to attract healthcare investment to the Catalan metropolis whilst Madrid has the advantage of being the financial capital, with a higher concentration of venture capital groups, and is home to many of Spain’s largest companies and banks. Which one would you move to?

An update on what's been happening in Victoria this month from our VIC lead Paul Mitchinson ------------------------------------------------------------------- This month we’re talking about putting Victorian startups on the Global stage. We’re starting to see globalisation efforts increase across both public and private sectors as we’re trying to build out of 2023. The local Victorian (and wider AU) market, like all markets is tight, with a cautious approach to how we move forwards, which means we’re looking further a field for growth. Victoria hosted a number of international focussed events during March. The 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit was hosted in Melbourne where leaders shared their vision for our region, and discussed ways to strengthen our practical cooperation, from deepening ties between our people and economies, to boosting our cooperation on education, and environmental issues. Whilst traditionally growing businesses have their eyes firmly set on the bright lights of the US, we have a huge region on our doorstep with huge potential for Victorian businesses to scale into. There’s absolutely no issues of scaling into the US, after all it is one of the biggest markets, but it should be for the right reasons for the business. Global Victoria ran a great in person session in March on fund raising in the US, with two prominent US based VC’s in attendance. Our local export agencies, alongside international agencies are also recruiting for a number of trade missions gearing up for three major conferences in Europe: London Tech Week, Viva Tech, and Money 20/20. If these markets are of interest, make sure you make cont. Last but not least, HEX have put a call out for all Melbourne based entrepreneurs looking to launch their startup into the Ho Chi Minh City ecosystem with their MELB <> HCMC Entrepreneur Exchange. Join the waitlist for their next program here: https://lnkd.in/g_rd-WhN
