Waste pickers are the unsung heroes of environmental sustainability in South Africa. Their relentless efforts divert waste from landfills, saving municipalities millions annually. The government has recognized their vital role through policies like the Waste Picker Integration Guideline, aiming to improve their working conditions and integrate them into formal recycling processes. These initiatives underscore the importance of reclaimers in achieving environmental justice and economic empowerment. Celebrating their contributions is crucial as we strive for a sustainable future. #EIA #ENVIRONMENTALMANAGEMENT #HEROES Read the full article [here](https://lnkd.in/dxAuYkdY).

South Africa's journey towards sustainable recycling has been shaped by a unique environmental history, distinct from Western counterparts. From the era of landfilling to the emergence of recycling and the flood of regulations, the nation has navigated challenges in waste management. In 2012, a pivotal shift occurred with the introduction of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), signaling a drive for change. EPR places responsibility on producers to manage the disposal of their products, promoting a circular economy. As South Africa grapples with environmental issues, understanding these historical stages illuminates the path to a greener future. 🌍💚 #reclaimingthefuture #RecyclingHistory #SustainableSouthAfrica

BRANCHING OUT: Did you know that we have partnered with environmental organisation Forest Carbon since 2020 and havw so far ‘captured’ a total of 439.1 tonnes of CO2, helping to plant approximately 1,756 trees? Carbon emissions produced by our waste collecting vehicles and employees’ journeys to and from work are off-set through the UK woodland carbon capture scheme. With four trees planted for every tonne of carbon emitted, our contribution from 108 tonnes of carbon footprint equates to approximately 432 trees planted every year. The project helps create new woodlands that benefit the country, the landscape and the global environment. We are supporting initiatives in Yorkshire, Northumberland, the Scottish Borders and Highlands, as well as internationally in Uruguay, Peru and Guatemala. Pauline Griggs, our Compliance Officer and ‘environmental ambassador’, said: “We care greatly about our environment and our actions as a business are formulated with that thought in mind. “We are particularly proud about our achievement in helping to plant a hectare of trees and, while continue to strive to reduce our overall emissions, we remain committed to supporting the work of Forest Carbon.” 🌲 Find out more: https://lnkd.in/dKfKJmJd #trees #planting #carbonemissions #forest #woodland #global #initiatives #carbonfootprint

On this Earth Day, let's pause and listen to the heartbeat of our planet, a rhythm marred by the echoes of waste, the gasps of air pollution, and the tears of water pollution. Our Earth, once a vibrant canvas of life and beauty, now bears the scars of our neglect and exploitation. As we gaze upon the smog-choked skies and witness the once-pristine waters tainted by our disregard, we cannot ignore the ache in our hearts. The Earth, our home, suffers silently under the weight of our actions. Each piece of plastic tossed carelessly, each puff of toxic emissions released into the air, each drop of polluted water poured into rivers and oceans—these are not just environmental issues; they are cries for help from a planet in distress. Yet, amid the despair, there is hope. Earth Day serves as a poignant reminder that it's not too late to mend our ways, to heal the wounds we've inflicted upon our home. It's a call to action, a rallying cry for collective responsibility and stewardship of the Earth. Let us pledge to tread lightly upon the Earth, to cherish and protect its precious resources. Let us embrace sustainability, innovation, and compassion in our daily lives. Let us strive to leave behind a legacy of conservation and restoration for future generations to inherit—a legacy built upon respect, harmony, and love for our planet. This Earth Day, let us rekindle our connection to the Earth and recommit ourselves to being guardians of its beauty and bounty. For in protecting the Earth, we ultimately protect ourselves and all living beings who call this planet home. #earthday #2024 Waste Management Society of Nigeria (WAMASON), Lagos Council The World BankWorld Economic Forum Prof. Ganesh Channa IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law #enviornment

More than a third of the world’s population is drowning in garbage, with over 2.7 billion people not having their waste collected, largely in the developing regions of the world, finds UN Environment Programme report. An estimated 540 million metric tons of municipal solid waste, an equivalent of 27% of the global total waste, was not being collected, with only 36% and 37% of the refuse generated in Sub-Saharan Africa and Central and South Asia regions, respectively, being collected https://lnkd.in/dtrRyGw3
