Lately, news about generative AI (think ChatGPT, for example) has overshadowed any news about the metaverse. However, the question remains: How close are we to the metaverse becoming a reality? For some, the race towards a functioning metaverse is far from over. Five main players have emerged as possible winners in this race towards a new iteration of the internet. Find out more about these players and their strategies at the link below. #metaverse #web3

What if the metaverse is merely the mixing of artificial and real. A blending of reality and virtual so that a person can no longer distinguish between the two? The idea of the metaverse as a seamless blend of virtual and real elements, where the distinction becomes imperceptible, is where the future takes us. Storytelling in Hollywood today requires millions of dollars in budgets, but innovators are already building entire productions solely with AI capabilities available to almost everyone today. The blended reality is already here; it's just low fidelity today. Take, for example, how we experience the world augmented by our smartphones: When I drive my car, I experience the roadways behind the wheel of a car, and my smartphone screen shows me the traffic ahead with the Waze app. I was such an early user of Waze that I remember its Pac-man-like feature. When driving on a new road as the first or second Wazer, your character munchs the dots (and collects points) to record the roadway. But all of this experience today is through a phone screen. When we see the world through that screen, it's already nearly impossible to discern when an image is generated. In fact, many images on Facebook today are already synthetic, if not completely generated. We've been living with Snapchat filters for years. The integration only grows from here, and this is the worst the tech will ever be. As the line between virtual and real blurs, it could fundamentally change how we perceive and interact with our environment: And this is already having profound implications. I would argue that even visionary science fiction writers could not have imagined what is already possible today with the power of AI and visualization technology. While this vision of a blended reality metaverse is compelling and already emerging with today's technology, it also presents the biggest challenge. What won't change is that the use of your brain is required. We must double down on becoming thinkers who can be discerning and ask the right questions rather than just letting the machine synthesize them for us. After all, if it's all synthetic, it's up to us to decide what's real.

I'm bullish on #AI and the #Metaverse. Welcome to the party #latimes Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to significantly reshape the future of the internet, overshadowing the once-hyped concept of the metaverse. A few years ago, the metaverse was at the forefront of tech industry discussions, with companies envisioning a future where people would lead digital lives as avatars in 3D virtual worlds. However, this vision has not yet come to fruition, partly due to the dystopian themes portrayed in movies like "Ready Player One" and "The Matrix," which may have dampened public enthusiasm. In the meantime, AI has captured the tech industry's attention. Major players, including Meta and studio heads from Sony Pictures and Paramount, have shifted their focus to AI, hoping it will streamline production and cut costs. AI's rise has been rapid, and its applications in various sectors, from media to tech, have quickly become apparent. Despite this shift, some, like author Matthew Ball, continue to believe in the potential of the metaverse. Ball's updated book, "Building the Spatial Internet," reflects ongoing interest in virtual worlds, even as AI dominates the conversation. Recent advancements in technology, such as Apple's Vision Pro, have reignited interest in head-mounted displays and VR/AR goggles. However, these devices face challenges related to price, form factor, and content, limiting their mass adoption. Blockchain technology, another key component of the metaverse vision, has also evolved significantly, experiencing both setbacks and resurgence. Cryptocurrencies and blockchain applications have weathered market fluctuations and regulatory scrutiny, with many still viewing them as integral to the internet's future. AI's impact extends beyond mere technological shifts; it influences cultural and economic aspects as well. While AI investment has diverted attention from the metaverse, it also holds the potential to enhance virtual experiences. AI-driven developments could lower costs and improve interactions in virtual spaces, making concepts like virtual theme parks more feasible. Meanwhile, the decline in traditional entertainment consumption, such as moviegoing, highlights a broader trend towards digital and social media platforms, further shaping the future of entertainment and interaction. Many in the Web 3 community, especially on platforms like Twitter X, are diligently working on diverse projects ranging from meme coins to tokenized real estate. Despite AI's current prominence, the underlying technology of the metaverse continues to develop in the background. These efforts are paving the way for innovations like ticketed NFTs, decentralized finance, and instant cross-border payments. Moreover, integrating AI into new metaverse systems can unlock unprecedented utility, creating opportunities for those with the vision to anticipate and adapt to emerging trends.
