I came across this opinion piece/article in USA Today, written by two experienced Chiefs of Police who both served in Wisconsin (among other states), David Couper and Noble Wray. The two authors have composed a list of 7 steps which they say are needed to reduce citizen deaths at the hands of Police Officers. The first one listed is "Educating," in which the authors state that police agencies should only hire 4 year college grads "who should be screened for emotional intelligence." I don't see a serious return to a 4 year college degree requirement as a prerequisite for employment in most agencies, particularly at at the local level, as opposed to federal agencies; far too many college grads are bypassing public guardian careers for others that are far less stressful, and have for several years now. While the two bring up the disparaging numbers of civilian deaths by police in Europe vs. the U.S., the two authors have left out the fact that firearms are far more difficult to obtain there than they are here in the U.S.
Opinion: Why does the US lead the world in deadly force by police?

I have written extensively on fixing law enforcement recruiting on my Substack https://lnkd.in/exTP7NkE. I strongly recommend the work of Dr. Travis Yates on his Substack (https://lnkd.in/ew_qi22w) as he recognizes what needs to get fixed in order to get the necessary recruits for the next generation of law enforcement. One of the key distractions to avoid at this point is drop the nonsense of rebuilding trust. Cops have taken a credibility hit but remain one of the most trusted professions. Verify whether this is true or not, don't take my word for it. Extract your self from the rabbit hole of diversity. If your power was out for days, you wouldn't care who was driving the bucket truck. 30 X 30 is an excellent example of this - even if your agency is 30% female by 2030, no one will know unless you tell them. I'll be publishing an article on this topic in the next day or so and I'll be sharing some ideas from Dr. Yates and Mike Forehand of Police Hiring Solutions. Maybe if we learn from the investments of the private sector, we will have the courage to make the changes necessary to succeed.
Strategic Operations Leader with 20+ Years in Law Enforcement and Government Administration: Expert in Operations Management, Project Leadership, Team Development, and Risk Mitigation
Recruiting the Next Generation of Police Officers Recruiting qualified police officers in 2024 continues to be one of the most significant challenges facing law enforcement agencies across the country. As departments work to rebuild trust, prioritize diversity, and adapt to the evolving expectations of the communities we serve, the task of finding dedicated candidates has become increasingly complex. We’ve tried to think creatively—whether it’s enhanced outreach programs, updated hiring incentives, or expanding the use of social media—but it still feels like a steep climb. To my colleagues in law enforcement and beyond: What’s working for your agency? Are there innovative strategies or programs that have helped you successfully recruit and retain officers in this difficult climate? I’d love to hear your feedback. Let’s learn from one another to meet this challenge head-on. #LawEnforcement #Recruitment #CommunityPolicing #PublicSafety #ToPost

I have an idea for fighting crime that could benefit society, the many people who enforce law and order, our military and criminals. I am curious to hear what you think. I don't want first or even second offenders who haven't committed a violent crime to go to jail, nor do I want what many have framed to be beneficiaries of 'catch' and 'release.' Our society can only function through Crime Doesn't Pay. I want non-violent convicted criminals to go to a boot camp run by our military. It will be a school of trust and respect that will teach them important values and life skills, such as teamwork, discipline, work ethic, and caring for each other. There are no cell doors, barbed wire, or guards with guns. If someone goes AWOL or violates the code of conduct, they will be moved to prison. For those who commit. Any sentence reduction will be based on accomplishments, such as learning a life skill, finishing a degree, mastering a trade, learning how to farm or work in hospitality, or caring for the elderly. Records will be expunged for graduates who take advantage of job placement and prove their capability over time. I predict that some will appreciate the security that comes with this way of life - purpose, pursuit, housing, food, respect, and personal growth- and choose to have a military or law enforcement career, helping us close the recruitment gap we face. Is this idea possible? Let's share it and see what others think. It's your turn to be the judge. #chatterthatmatters #crime #society #peace #ideas
