After last week’s Global Forum for Buildings and Climate in Paris, where representatives from 70 countries signed the Chaillot declaration, agreeing to lay the foundation for progress towards a rapid, fair, and effective transition of the buildings sector, Members of the European Parliament further underlined the importance of the building sector in the green transition today. The European Parliament just voted in favour of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), introducing important new provisions to make our buildings energy efficient, decarbonized and healthier, factoring in all building parameters: from energy to environment and health.   With a broader scope, EPBD now goes beyond energy performance to better acknowledge that whole life carbon and indoor comfort is an important development, sending a strong signal that EPBD goes beyond decarbonizing our building stock. It’s also about improving living conditions, creating jobs in the construction sector, increasing our energy dependence and protecting citizens and businesses from high energy prices – all critical areas to tackle for Europe’s future resilience and competitiveness.   Congratulations to the European Parliament on this important milestone towards formal adoption, in particular, Morten Helveg Petersen and Ciarán Cuffe for succeeding in reaching a balanced compromise. Perks of being a public affairs and policy enthusiast: you get excited when a EU directive is approved by the parliament 🎉 The decision to pass the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) marks a significant step towards sustainability and energy efficiency in the building sector. The EPBD will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions, make our buildings more climate-friendly, and help reduce energy costs. A very positive addition to the revised directive is the inclusion of provisions for #HealthyBuildings. A flagship publication, ‘The Global Status Report for #Buildings and #Construction’, by UN Environment Programme and Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) provides an annual snapshot of the progress of the buildings and construction sector on a global scale.  Highlights:  ★ The industry is not on track to reach the Paris Agreement goals.   ★ The report even shows that emissions have actually grown by 1% compared to 2021;    Other interesting findings:  ★ 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: In 2022, the overall energy use in buildings increased by 1%, driven by the added floorspace in emerging economies. This net growth is positive as cooling demand increased more than the decrease in space heating demand.  ★ 𝐄𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐚 𝐠𝐚𝐩 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰: In 2022, the CO2 emissions from building operations are 40 per cent higher than the reference value. To get on track, CO2 emissions should reduce on average by around ten per cent every year until 2030.  ★ 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: ☆ Global investment in the energy efficiency of buildings increased by around 14% in 2022. This figure is estimated to fall slightly in 2023 due to rising borrowing costs. However, energy efficiency presents a means of moderating energy cost volatility as well as reducing emissions.  ☆ Electrification spending accounts for an average of 12% from total efficiency spending.  ★ 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐬: 80% of the projected floor area growth by 2030 is expected to occur in developing and emerging economies that currently lack the necessary building energy codes and enforcement to limit the growth of energy demand.  ★ 𝐂𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: The WorldGBC recognizes the role of voluntary green building standards and certifications, but the limited availability and transparency of the data openly published by building certification entities remain a barrier. #ParisAgreementGoals #emissions #energy #energyconsumption #emissionsperformance #CO2emissions #investment #ESG #engagement

𝗜𝗫𝗢 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧𝗦 | New SBTi Building Sector Guidance 📝 ❇ Our latest 'IXO Insights' looks at the draft building guideline proposed by SBTi. Are your assets and portfolio #ready with a #responseplan? Science Based Targets initiative (#SBTi) unveiled their draft guidelines for the building sector in December 2023. These #newguidelines are tilted at demonstrating much higher (~>50% reduction) in upfront embodied carbon emissions by 2030 compared to reduction targets under prior, 2˚C-aligned, targets (~20-25%). This represents a significant #industry #stepchange, of the likes we have not seen since the Industrial Revolution. These kinds of targets cannot be achieved with green technology alone, or downstream design optimization alone, or material replacement alone, or upgraded/retro-commissioned plant alone. #Pilottesting is currently underway with conclusions expected to be published this year. ❇ Do you need a partner to co-develop a practical and rapid response for your building or portfolio to #stayahead of the market? Whole Life-cycle Carbon (WLC) reporting is mandatory for all new buildings in Europe starting 2030! Last Friday, EU member states adopted a recast of the EPBD, setting the stage for robust transformation of the real estate industry. This ambitious update aims to drastically cut carbon emissions and align with the EU’s Fit for 55 target. 🏢🌱 Key highlights from the directive include, amoung others : 📌 Mandatory Whole-Life-Cycle carbon reporting for all new buildings starting 2030 📌 Compulsory retrofits for the least energy-efficient buildings; 📌 More rigorous energy efficiency standards for public and commercial buildings. 📌 All new constructions required to be zero-emission. Member States are also required to draft a roadmap by 2027, setting WLC limit values for all new constructions from 2030 onwards. This is a great step towards making Europe's building sector climate-neutral by 2050. The EU has implemented several policies to improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, and promote circularity in the building sector. These include the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), the Renovation Wave initiative, and the Construction Products Regulation (CPR). Hooray! This is truly a big day if you're into #energyefficiency, #buildings #decarbonisation #renovation #health and #climate. The European Parliament voted in favour of the #EPBD, thus taking a huge step forward towards creating more energy efficient, decarbonised and healthier buildings for all Europeans. Many people and organisations have been part of getting us to where we are today and I will not even attempt to name them all. Some that deserve a mention are Ciarán Cuffe and Morten Helveg Petersen in the EP and all of EuroACE - Energy Efficient Buildings - both the secretariat (Adrian Joyce and Rémi Collombet-Gourdon) and the very active members, including ourselves at VELUX (shout-out to Elisabeth Hoffmann for leading our work on this!)
