All roads lead to Rome…where, over the last 2 days, our Chair Marcus Bokkerink and Executive Director of the Digital Markets Unit Will Hayter, met with representatives of the other G7 member states, the European Commission and the OECD - OCDE, at the Joint Competition Authorities and Policymakers’ Summit. At the Summit, Marcus and Will were delighted to discuss recent developments in AI, enforcement activities, and policy and regulatory issues in the digital sector. The Summit's overarching theme was developing a common vision for the future of competition policy in the era of #AI. At the conclusion of the summit, we published a joint G7 Digital Competition Communiqué, reinforcing our shared commitment to enforce competition laws and develop policies as necessary to ensure the principles of fair competition are applied to digital markets. It also emphasises the importance of global alignment in how we approach these issues. The CMA would like to thank the Italian Competition Authority (Autorità Garante della Concorrenza e del Mercato) for hosting this year. A few more words about what happened... First and foremost, when examining the photo, please do not rely on simple pattern matching. Please do me a favor and read the message. 🤣 The recent re-election of Donald Trump can be seen as a chance, a chance for the EU and Germany. While it looks like Donald Trump will not slow down USA's progress in high-tech including AI, there are also voices that claim that "America first" could be a challenge for other continents. I see the challenge and recognize it as a chance. The EU and Germany now could and should focus on facilitating their own economic growth and strengthening their high-tech agendas. Open-source software and open Artificial Intelligence could be building blocks in pushing our continent forward. What happened is a wake-up call. Are you awake? Cool cap by the even cooler Bart De Witte.

G7 competition approach for AI. This week I joined my CMA colleague Will Hayter and officials from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and Department for Business and Trade to participate in the G7 competition authorities and government policymakers’ discussions on AI, hosted brilliantly by the Autorità Antitrust I took away that across these seven advanced and liberal democratic economies, we are all working to achieve common outcomes, in coherent ways. There is particular alignment on: 1. The tremendously positive impact AI can bring to innovation, productivity and growth for our people, businesses and economies; 2. The best ways to achieve those positive outcomes now, and importantly in the future, anchored on competition and transparency, both in the development of powerful AI models and in how people and businesses use them across the economy; 3. The biggest risks that could hold back that potential, and how to preempt those risks through competition and consumer protection enforcement and targeted, proportionate regulation; 4. That means, putting into practice: access for innovators to the key inputs needed to develop AI foundation models; diversity in foundation models and in ways to access them in the market; choice for businesses and people in when and how they use such models and under what conditions, without anti-competitive restrictions, exclusions or exploitation; and of course, transparency for and accountability to customers; 5. How each of our sovereign nations can bring about those positive market outcomes, through both corrective and preemptive action, within our respective legal frameworks. The joint communique reflects that coherence.
