Sometimes the best way to flex your creative muscles is to step away from the tools of your trade, and pick up something completely different. Reading this article about Microsoft Paint reminds us of why it’s so important for creatives to have outlets that aren’t tied to their day jobs. MS Paint, with all its pixelated quirks and bare-bones features, was never meant to rival Photoshop or Illustrator. That’s exactly why it became so beloved. Its limitations invited play. Its simplicity encouraged experimentation. And in embracing its ‘crappiness’, people found ways to make something uniquely theirs. https://lnkd.in/eFZQBvuN For those of us in creative fields, there’s a lesson here. If you’re a photographer, try sculpting with clay. If you’re a designer, maybe pick up a guitar. If you’re an animator, grab some watercolors. Shifting to a completely different medium—and maybe even using a tool that’s ‘past its prime’—takes the pressure off perfection and reconnects you with the joy of making things just because. That same idea—exploring new disciplines to energize your core craft—connects directly to an upcoming JMA Radio episode* featuring Lauren Ducrey. In it, Lauren dives into how she uses poetry to help marketers & non-marketers rediscover their own creativity, and discusses how ‘working in verse’ can help organizations break out of their rivers of thinking when it comes to storytelling & collaboration. And while Lauren’s approach makes use of a ‘non-traditional’ technique…her process shows how creative constraint can inspire & expand the possibilities when working with more modern tools such as AI & LLMs. Jeff Miner has his Bolex 16mm, Mason Lawrence has his Hasselblad–do you have a favorite just for fun creative habit that keeps you inspired? #retro #mspaint #microsoft #inspire #tech #ai *This video will launch in the 2H of January on the JMA YouTube channel.

Creativity is emergent - which means if you want to come up with that marketing campaign idea, comms slogan or any other solution stepping away from your immediate task is probably the best way to solve it. Poetry is ideal since it keeps you in the realm of language but breaks its patterns to launch you into creative thinking within minutes!

My daughter made this chili pepper using MS Paint when she was barely 3. It never fails to bring a smile, so I keep it handy. She’s an 18 year-old fashion design major now. And I still use Paint several times a week.

Yes! I agree completely. Definitely important to set up a specific creative space. A little tricky in NYC apartments though😅
