So true! For startups and SMB's, taking a spray-and-pray approach to marketing is almost certain to fail. But I see this kind of thing a lot -- a startup or SMB will hire a Marketing Director and tell them to launch five or six channels simultaneously with little to no budget. "We'll see what works," is the thinking. But of course, it's likely then that nothing will work.
You can't get traction with Meta ads without a budget. You can't make SEO work without a serious effort at content (i.e. paying content creators to create stuff). Influencers aren't free -- you usually have to pay them, especially the ones with actual influence. No matter how targeted your SEM audience is and well constructed your campaigns, you will still have to pay Google.
Perhaps it's true you can't afford to have a real presence in multiple channels. So instead of spray and pray, pick one or two channels, and put in at least a decent budget. Otherwise don't bother.
Go medium, or go home.
