🤝 Today (5th September) is International Day of Charity, and as "giving back" is a core value of ours at Hays, it seems like the perfect time to recap and celebrate some of our charitable efforts. As part of our Helping For Your Tomorrow programme, we partner with a variety of good causes and charitable organisations, with the goal of "always doing the right thing." Here are some of the ways we put this into practice: 💙 Staff encouragement: We give our staff 16 hours of paid volunteering each year, so they can donate their skills and time to their local community or to causes that really matter to them. 💙 Social mobility: We work with EveryYouth, a network of UK youth homelessness charities, to help young people into employment, education and training pathways. 💙 New starts: We've launched Flourish, a pro-bono service for organisations that are able to help disadvantaged young people secure jobs with real future prospects. 💙 Raising funds: Our Sea to Summit fundraising initiative – in which Hays colleagues took part in a physical challenge scaling Snowdon – raised £50,000 for EveryYouth’s Employability Fund. 💙 Giving back: We've partnered with Neighbourly, a platform that connects companies with local causes, for the second year in a row, delivering over 6,600 hours of voluntary work in our first phase during May. International Day of Charity is an internationally celebrated day on 5th September. It was first introduced by the United Nations. The day was chosen to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa. She was known for her dedication to charitable work and gave her life to helping others and overcoming poverty, suffering and distress. Teaching children about the work of #MotherTeresa is one way of recognising the importance of the day. The aim of the International Day of Charity is to raise awareness and give a platform to charity activities around the world for charitable, individuals and #Volunteer organisations at local, national and international levels. International Day of Charity seeks to enhance social responsibility and increase public support of charitable causes. In 3 hours we raised rupees fifty lakhs for a nonprofit through storytelling. All I did was get Girish Kulkarni the founder of Snehalaya a non profit organisation to come on stage and share his story with the audience. I got over 300 employees of an organisation to raise funds for an ambulance in 3 days for a nonprofit. I have trained over 500 nonprofit organisations on how not to ask but tell a story to build tribes. I had over 90% of employees in a global IT company participate in voluntary payroll giving with storytelling. All causes are stories, waiting to spread. Nonprofits are treasure troves of inspiring stories—from beneficiaries they impact to the dedicated volunteers and passionate founders who make it all possible. Habitat for Humanity doesn’t just build houses; they build hope and stability for families in need. The Make-A-Wish Foundation doesn’t just grant wishes; they bring joy and light to children facing serious health challenges. These heartfelt stories are not just about what is done, but about the profound human connections and changes that occur. The way to purse strings moves through the heart . And the heart moves with a story. People who donate are buying something, it could be legacy or karma or even taking care of guilt. Every cause has a tribe that believes in a story. When the tribe comes together it becomes a collective story. Find out the emotions that drive your tribe and help them on their journey to fill their gap with your cause. Get your tribe to act either through volunteering or giving , begin with a story. By sharing stories with your tribe , nonprofits can deeper emotional bonds, inspire and attract the support needed to continue their vital missions. Nonprofits make a tremendous difference in people’s lives, and their stories deserve to be shared with the world. It's a contradiction in terms when a charity that is focussed on supporting people (whether that's with physical or mental health, food poverty, homelessness and housing, welfare, etc) does its best for its beneficiaries, but fails to support its staff and ensure that their health and welfare needs are met. This subject has popped up on my timeline a few times recently and I've found it quite triggering. So many charities do fantastic work with the people they work with - there are hundreds of case studies and testimonials to the benefits that they have provided to the communities that they serve. But if you asked the staff about their well-being, they often fall below par on looking after those who work for them. I recently heard the statistic that 32% of charities are reporting issues with staff well-being (compared to just 7% last year). But what are charities doing to address this? Yes, many charities now have mental health first-aiders. Many have independent systems in place where staff can access advice and counselling. So why is the number going up? I have my theories, but would be interested to hear yours!

The original ambition was for it to be a dataviz piece similar to the blogs we did on homelessness but it ended up becoming far more than the intended sum of its parts” Sarah: Words Matter – “because it forced (in a good way) me reflect on how listening is not enough, we MUST take action to change the words we write and say. It is easy to claim we use inclusive language, but non-inclusive terms are embedded in research and evaluation - as evaluators we can do better.” Emily: Running a Charity – “This blog highlights the importance and immense value volunteers bring to charities of all sizes. Volunteers are often the backbone of smaller charities, where resources can be limited. The blog provides a practical, easy-to-follow framework to help charities effectively manage and engage their volunteers. I like that we guide readers step-by-step, empowering them to unlock/integrate the full potential of a volunteer program and make a significant impact every day. "I thought people volunteered for charities?!" 🙋♂️🙋♀️ A question I was asked recently when they discovered that I #recruit for the charity sector. The assumption that #charities should run entirely on volunteer power is something I have unfortunately heard multiple times. Maybe you have too? Yet that assumption is far from reality. When I have challenged critics if they would #volunteer themselves, the response is usually a quick "I'm too busy" or "I don't have time for that." That's exactly the point. Running a #charity is HARD WORK! 💪 #Working for a charity requires dedication, expertise, and consistent commitment that goes beyond what most volunteers can offer: - Securing funding - Ensuring compliance - Managing multiple projects - Coordinating volunteer teams - Delivering services - Planning long-term strategies To state just a few things. Many don't realise the scale and complexity of running a charity. The truth is, charities need both paid staff and volunteers to function effectively.
