📍 MEDAWEEK BARCELONA 2024 I  Within the ‘Mediterranean Creative Industry Forum’, we had the chance to explore the challenges and opportunities inherent in the cultural landscape and foster collaborative efforts to advance the Mediterranean creative industry. 💡 One of the initiatives that were presented at the forum was the Creative Business Network, which supports start-ups and entrepreneurs in the creative industry through a global network of partners and investors. This is a unique spot for those interested in creative sectors to gather, share ideas, and have conversations. This platform responds to the growing demand of the sector's agents to have a collaborative space where tangible solutions to the specific challenges of the creative industry can be addressed. 🎯 The panelists highlighted the advantages of this network that aspires to be a truly creative industry cluster: ✅ A unique platform that connects regional and international creatives, facilitating the exchange of ideas and knowledge and collaborative work on joint projects. 🔍 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝘂𝗺 last week, organized by Ganado Advocates and Zampa Debattista. I had the pleasure of joining a panel discussion focused on the internationalisation of local family businesses. Here are my key takeaways: 1️⃣ 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗶𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴: A solid business structure is essential, but don’t let perfection hold you back. Embrace the challenge and get started. Your current structure needs to support both local and new international operations until everything is fully set up. 2️⃣ 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Who will lead your expansion? Assigning this task to an overstretched team won’t cut it. Ensure you have the right talent in place—people who are equipped and committed to driving your international growth from day one. 3️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗰, 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗢𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰: Internationalisation should be a deliberate part of your growth strategy, not a reaction to market trends or saturation. Your business purpose, values, and culture should guide your expansion plans—not what everyone else is doing. 4️⃣ 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Different countries mean different markets, cultures, and preferences. Avoid a copy-paste approach. Respect local nuances, adapt where needed, but stay true to your core values. Authenticity wins over rigidity. 5️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀: Tap into networks with minimal conflict of interest, such as business representative association, chambers and embassies. These independent entities often provide valuable connections, resources, and advice that can significantly shorten your learning curve. I'm often told by friends and colleagues — those within the region and established expats – that we need to 'shout about' our North East more and that we're not that great at doing so. The conversation cropped up again this month's inaugural BUSINESSiQ North East Impact event at the fabulous Hopetown Darlington. Panelists including Teesside International Airport's Phil Forster and The North East Combined Authority's portfolio holder for Culture, Creative, Tourism and Sport, Amanda Hopgood, both told a packed audience that we need to 'shout about' what's going on up here. Of course they're right. But I've always been of the opinion that, as proud North Easterners we're actually very good at shouting about what's great in our region. As a community, we're fantastic narrators and our stories are underpinned by an in-built passion and self-belief. The bigger problem in 2024 (or almost 2025)? Where do we tell those stories? The decline of quality local and regional media means there are fewer and fewer opportunities to reach the people who matter. Platforms for engaging storytelling are disappearing daily. The trusted voices keen to shout about our amazing region suddenly have nowhere to go. If we want to celebrate what's unique, exciting and optimistic about the North East — and of course we do — then how do we go about it? How do we spread the word and celebrate the wins? Shouting about our region really isn't a problem. It's just becoming increasingly difficult knowing where best to amplify our biggest wins. Feel free to point me in the right direction...
