Mixed croppingMixed cropping is growing of two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land. It is also known as multiple cropping. This type of cropping leads to an improvement in the fertility of the soil and hence, increase in crop yield because when the two crops are properly chosen the products and refuse from one crop plant help in the growth of the other crop plant and vice-versa.Mixed cropping is an insurance against crop failure due to abnormal weather conditions.Banana is cultivated predominantly as a commercial shade crop for coffee on Palney and Shevaroy hills, contributing to income in the initial years. In mixed farming systems, bananas are used as a ground shade and nurse-crop for a range of shade crops including cocoa, coffee black pepper and nutmeg.In coastal areas of Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, banana is grown in coconut and Arecanut plantations with tall varieties. Apart from these palm crops, banana plantations are intercropped with ginger, turmeric, elephant-foot yam, cotton, gourd and other vegetables to exploit maximum income/unit area.

For Mahesh Asabe of Kolhapur, Maharashtra, owner of Rukmini Farms and Nursery, farming was in his blood, and his innovative father was his idol. He saw how his father profited from farming Indian jujubes, a new fruit on his drought-hit farmland. He wanted to try something different too. The idea of dragon fruit farming came to his mind. It is a cactus plant and a creeper. It does not require much water or land. It is also resistant to pests. Mahesh bought saplings of different varieties of dragon fruit saplings from different places and planted them on his 20-acre farm. He got back his initial investment in the second year itself. After this success, there was no looking back for this young man. Today he has diversified into food processing of dragon fruit. Turning it into jams, squashes, juice chips and wine. He provides training to other farmers at a nominal cost to help them grow dragon fruit on their own farms. He also supplies saplings of exotic varieties of fruit through his nursery. Mahesh Asabe now earns over ₹2 crore from farming the dragon fruit and has an additional income from his nursery, food processing unit and training sessions. Bulbulina Marak, a dedicated member of Merry Self-Help Group (SHG) and Answmai Village Organization (VO) in Bordwar Neja village, Pub-Mangaldai, Assam has been actively cultivating vegetables for different seasons since last year. With a total area of 2.5 bigha, she allocated 1.5 bigha for brinjal cultivation and 1 bigha for cabbage during the previous year's Kharif season. Under the ITC-MSK project, Bulbulina received comprehensive training on various aspects of organic farming, including dung-based organic manure preparation, Integrated Pest and Disease Management (IPDM), seed sorting and treatment, nursery bed preparation, spacing, and land preparation. She also implemented eco-friendly fly traps to effectively control pests in her fields. During the Kharif season, Bulbulina diligently applied the knowledge and techniques acquired through training. With the support and guidance of the project, she successfully cultivated organic crops, earning a remarkable income of Rs. 36,000. Her earnings were primarily from selling brinjal, fetching Rs. 24,000, and other vegetables, bringing in Rs. 12,000.
