A promise made is a promise kept! I am pleased to share my second article on critical minerals, this time focusing on innovation💡 While in the first article I sought to debunk misconceptions and explain why we need critical minerals for the energy transition, this time I focused on the role innovation can and must play to: ➡ Reduce the need for primary critical minerals - i.e. "new" minerals, as opposed to secondary, reused/recycled minerals ♻ ➡ Increase primary supply of critical minerals while reducing carbon emissions and the environmental impacts of exploration, extraction, processing and refining. Eight different innovative projects funded by the European Commission are working together to explore how to ensure a resilient stable supply of high-quality critical raw materials (CRMs) with a focus on sustainability and the goal of helping Europe to be as self-reliant as possible in this area. Some of these projects are ongoing: DigiEcoQuarry  (led by Asociación Nacional de Empresarios Fabricantes de Áridos - ANEFA, the Spanish Aggregate Producers Association that also leads another European Commission-funded project related to mining, ROTATE), #INSPIREE, New-RE Project, PASSENGER project, REEPRODUCE, REEsilience, RESiLEX Project, SALEMA EU , and some others have already presented all their solutions and have accomplished all their goals: SecREEts and SUSMAGPRO Project. #horizonprojects #horizon https://lnkd.in/d5M6GC_6

This is my first article as editor of Mining Magazine. It highlights why this is such a critical time for the sector: demand for critical minerals to power the energy transition is through the roof. On the other hand, some countries dominate production to such an extent that there could be serious supply shortfalls. That could threaten the transition we urgently must make to meet net-zero targets. Could new technologies be the answer?
