Recently, I came across a compelling story that made me rethink conventional definitions of success. Meet Chandrika, the famous Bada Pav lady from Delhi. Chandrika’s stall is a hotspot for locals and tourists alike, drawing crowds with her delectable, spicy Bada Pavs. What’s astonishing is that Chandrika earns around Rs. 40,000 a day, translating to nearly Rs. 12 lakhs a month. On the other hand, there's Anil, an MBA graduate from a reputed business school. Anil secured a respectable job in a multinational company and earns Rs. 40,000 a month. Anil's journey, marked by rigorous academic efforts and a hefty tuition fee, is often seen as the ideal career path. This stark contrast between Chandrika and Anil's earnings got me thinking. Here are a few lessons I gleaned from this comparison: Passion Over Degrees: Chandrika’s success is a testament to the power of passion. Her dedication to her craft has not only brought her financial success but also immense satisfaction. Entrepreneurial Spirit: Chandrika embodies the entrepreneurial spirit. Identifying a market need and delivering consistently high-quality service has propelled her to success. Skills Over Titles: While academic qualifications are important, skills, creativity, and the ability to understand and meet market demands often take you further. Redefining Success: Success is subjective. For some, it’s a high-paying corporate job, for others, it’s running a successful food stall. Both paths are valid and commendable. 🌟 Celebrating 25 years of diverse experience across education, corporate, and entrepreneurship! 🎉 March 1999 I got hired- I went to the office gate randomly and asked a man for directions to the reception, he asked my reasons, he asked few more questions and then casually said 'You are hired'. He was the owner and here I thought he was some random manager who came to the gate and gave polite but curt replies to his questions. I lasted only few weeks in the role as I was relocating to UK but hell of a start for me. The journey began then from teaching to managerial roles to now leading my own business journey, it's been an incredible ride from India, UK cities and back to Lucknow, India. I've had the privilege of contributing to various industries, mastering tech, education, marketing, and fostering vibrant communities along the way. But this is just the beginning. There's so much more I aspire to achieve, so many more dreams to achieve. Belongingness and Dignity “This is my job, it’s my role, it’s my KRA.” “This job is below my skill, my pay grade and my capability” People in jobs are often found saying such stuff. There is inherent difference between who they are and where they work. It’s sign of missing belongingness. People also are constantly running negotiations in their head between who they are, their skill, the money they are paid and the work they do. Itne mein itna hi! It defies the idea of intense work. The flow never comes because we are too caught up. When you run a business of your own like a small start up, you don’t say such stuff. In the last 5 years of observing Divya establish her bakery and now starting a new venture, I never found her using words like KRA, not my job or goal sheet. She does her intense work daily. Her work hours are extremely long but to her concept of work hours doesn’t exist. Everything is integrated. Work and family woven together. For example: She is working on delivering 20,000 chocolates and spends the evening handling clients from her kniting venture. The sense belonging is real. There isn’t any difference in her venture and herself. Are we failing to create that sense of belonging? Is this the reason why India has more start up that any other country? You are more valued than I am paying you? It is the bold statement I make to all my team members. I have been telling them that if you have spent at least 2 years with me and If you resign today and find a job, you will definitely get a better package that might be anywhere between 50-100% more than I have been paying you. Until you don't get such a significant jump in the package please don't leave the job. Because it not only reduces your market value, it also hurts me that I have trained people under me who still don't believe in my company's brand value and my process of training people at work. It's very clear in my mind that while providing employment, my job is not just to manage the payroll finance but to manage the career of an individual. If they are with me with an expectation of experience, they will get better than expected. It's not about technology, it's a 360 degree process of building a professional with people skills, communication, leadership, team work and giving back to society. 'Busyness' is not business. This is a theme which we intend to pursue for some time. In my work experience of 37 years, I have seen very busy individuals at the workplace whose busyness is not helping the business in any manner. There are several reasons for this phenomenon. This short video is based on the observation that organisations recruit manpower who are less 'costly' than the budgeted compensation for the position.
