Migrants enrich our lives by enhancing cultural diversity, fostering innovation, and driving economic progress in the societies they enter. Their influence can be seen in various aspects of global society—from arts and cuisine to science and technology. This day also presents us with an opportunity to delve into the complexities of migration. These complexities are often driven by various factors, including economic inequalities, the impact of climate change, and geopolitical instabilities, which compel people to seek better opportunities and safer environments in distant lands. Here's an interesting fact: As of 2020, out of the 281 million international migrants, a significant portion of 169 million are labor migrants, contributing their skills and labor to the growth and development of economies worldwide. Let us join hands in honoring migrants' resilience and efforts, acknowledging the immense value they add to our communities and nations. Every year on December 18, the world observes International Migrants Day, a time to honor the contributions of millions of people who leave their homes in search of better opportunities, safety, or simply a new beginning. Established by the United Nations in 2000, the day highlights the challenges and successes of migration in a world where more than 281 million individuals live outside their country of birth. Migration is a cornerstone of human history, driving cultural exchange, economic growth, and innovation. From skilled workers and entrepreneurs to refugees seeking refuge from conflict, migrants bring unique perspectives and talents that enrich societies. However, their journeys are often fraught with challenges—discrimination, unsafe travel conditions, and barriers to integration remain significant issues. This year’s theme emphasizes the need for inclusive policies that protect migrants’ rights while promoting their social and economic contributions. It’s also a call to recognize the resilience of migrant communities, who despite hardships, build new lives and inspire change. The World Migration Report 2024 underscores the complexity and critical nature of international migration. With 281 million migrants globally, and 117 million fleeing violence, it is evident that migration is both a challenge and an opportunity for the international community. Addressing the root causes of forced migration and supporting migrants in their new communities are essential steps towards a more inclusive and sustainable world. Today, on #InternationalMigrantsDay, it's crucial to recognize the significant impact of global migration. In 2020, there were approximately 281 million international migrants worldwide, representing 3.6% of the global population. Over the past five decades, the number of international migrants has seen a steady rise. Comparing the figures from 1990, there was an increase of 128 million individuals living in a country other than their nation of birth. This number is more than three times the estimate from 1970, highlighting the experiences, challenges, and contributions of individuals who have crossed borders in search of better opportunities and livelihoods.

In the context of International Migrants Day, JRS Europe Director Alberto Ares delivered a conference in Valencia titled "Debunking Migration Myths: Five Uncomfortable Truths." This event, organized by SJM Valencia, provided an important platform to address common misconceptions surrounding migration. Here are some important insights from the discussion: 1. Migration levels remain steady and are vital for economic growth.  2. Migrants contribute more to state economies than they receive in aid.  3. Contrary to common belief, migration does not increase crime rates; rather, regularization enhances security.  4. Migrants fill crucial roles that complement local labour markets, rather than displacing native workers.  5. Walls do not stop migration. Policies focused on inclusion and human dignity are the way forward. As Alberto Ares emphasized, "We must live as witnesses of hope, rooted in our values and passionate in our purpose."
