I visited Unison Networks Ltd's Camberley Substation in Hastings yesterday with our dedicated team who are doing the mahi to upgrade this critical network asset for Hastings. This project represents a $10 million investment driven by both asset renewal requirements and to support dynamic local growth.
The existing substation, having served the community for over 50 years, has reached the end of its lifecycle and can no longer meet the growing demand. This new state-of-the-art facility is designed to ensure the area's electricity needs are met well into the future.
Camberley substation is vital for advancing key Hastings infrastructure projects, including the Hawke's Bay Hospital upgrades, the Kaweka Hospital, and the Hastings District Council's Frimley water storage and treatment plant. Beyond supporting these critical developments, it will also play a vital role in helping our customers pursue their decarbonisation goals, aligning with New Zealand’s ambitious journey towards a zero-carbon future.
Inspired by the Windsor Substation, it integrates sustainable design, balancing environmental, social, and economic factors, while featuring environmentally friendly switchgear - the 36kV GIS dry air insulated, free from SF6 gas from RPS Switchgear.
The electricity distribution sector plays a vital role in our journey towards decarbonisation and supporting the electrification of Aotearoa New Zealand. As we move towards a more sustainable energy future, upgrading and modernising critical assets like the Camberley Substation is crucial in ensuring a reliable and resilient electricity supply for our communities well into the future.
