🌊 The Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) is playing a crucial role in understanding and protecting the vital ecosystem of the Northern California Current. By bringing together researchers and agencies across the region, MBON is facilitating collaboration and data sharing, enabling scientists to study the current dynamics more effectively. 🔔The new Belgian marine spatial plan is under public review. Let your voice be heard! Citizens can comment on the new marine spatial plan until the end of August. The plan states where there is room for which activities in the Belgian North Sea. 👏For the first time, marine reserves have been designated in the new marine spatial plan. The current plan will run until 2026. Luckily, the new one applies for a period of 8 years, until 2034, which will allow more time for nature to restore itself. 🐳The delineation of (strictly) protected marine areas fits within both the European Marine Strategy Framework Directive, the global biodiversity framework of the Convention on Biological Diversity (30% protected natural areas) and the EU Biodiversity Strategy 2030 (10% strictly protected natural areas). #4Sea #NorthSea #Marinespatialplan #marinereserve #oceanprotection Image: Misjel Decleer

🌊 Excited to share the Royal Society's report on conserving the high seas, produced from a roundtable I attended alongside Josefine Haubjerg Madsen to support ICF's work with Defra ahead of the entry into force of the UN Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement. This event brought together leading scientists and policy officials to discuss key scientific considerations for selecting sites for area-based management tools (ABMTs) in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction (ABNJ) and was an invaluable opportunity to contribute to the global conversation on marine conservation.
The high seas are a critical ecosystem, providing an estimated 95% of the habitat occupied by life on Earth and a vital range of ecosystem services, and yet are under threat due to human activity. Our policy note presents key scientific considerations for selecting sites for area-based management tools, including marine protected areas, under the new UN Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction agreement. As November comes to a close, we invite you to pause and reflect on your ongoing efforts in conservation and human behavior change. This month, we encourage you to consider how recent events and discussions in the conservation community are influencing your work. 🪴 Take a moment to reflect on these questions: - With the recent discussions at the IUCN Species Survival Commission Leaders' Meeting, how are you incorporating the link between biodiversity and human well-being into your projects? - In light of the new insights from the publication “Changing Human Behavior to Conserve Biodiversity” (https://lnkd.in/dsrhRjaJ), what specific behavioral interventions have you found most effective in your work? - Have you personally read any other insightful articles or publications this month that you’d like to share? We invite you to share your reflections and resources in the comments below! 💬🤝 #Conservation #BehaviourChange #Biodiversity #IUCNBehaviourChangeTaskForce #IUCN

Today it will be our last appointment of the series "Emerging voices: Young researcher's webinars on wetlands restoration" Organised in collaboration between RESTORE4Cs, ALFAwetlands, REWET and WET HORIZONS, these webinars recognize the critical importance of safeguarding wetland ecosystems, placing the spotlight on the next generation of wetland researchers. Today's presentations: Ojaswi Sumbh - WET HORIZONS- Developing and validation species-level biodiversity assessment model for wetlands vegetation Haonan Guo - WET HORIZONS - Response of GHG emissions to peatland rewetting: Influence of historical land use and rewetting water level Leo Raivonen - ALFAwetlands - PPGIS application on wetland use and economic valuation of biodiversity and ecosystem benefits of wetland restoration in six European countries
