In his recent article, Humana's Vivek Garg, MD, MBA makes a compelling case for re-establishing primary care as the foundation of wellness for older adults. We are celebrating #PatientSafetyAwarenessWeek by raising awareness about the limitations in the existing patient safety paradigm in obstetrics and perinatal health. The call to action includes 5 steps: 1. Expand the meaning of patient safety to include emotional safety. 2. Prioritize patient reported experience measures of care as the outcomes OR hospital performance indicators. 3. Name, measure, and monitor obstetric racism as a never event in obstetric patient safety. 4. Fund improvement and implementation strategies that measure, monitor, prevent and mitigate hospital acts of obstetric racism using the PREM-OB Scale®️. 5. Evaluate the impact of popular investments in apps, telehealth, doula support, and Midwifwey care in preventing and mitigating obstetric racism during hospitalization for childbirth using validated instruments such as the PREM-OB Scale®️.
