“There has never been more innovation available to clean industrial process technology, and the funding available from laws like IRA and IIJA make these alternatives more economically competitive than ever before. This is the ideal time to take another look at both critical air permitting elements – for the benefit of local communities, public health, and the climate.“ Clean Air Task Force's two key takeaways: -- EPA should pull back the “redefining the source” policy -- EPA should reinvigorate the Clean Air Act’s “alternatives” requirement Full article here: https://lnkd.in/eabZyc3U

You know what's REALLY scary?🎃 Breathing polluted air!🤧 On Tuesday, October 29, 2024, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IL EPA) was selected to receive funding through the Clean Ports Program, which aims to reduce air pollution at US ports. Illinois secured funding for both opportunities: - Climate and Air Quality Planning (CAQP) Competition: provides funding for climate and air quality initiatives at U.S. ports, empowering port stakeholders to reduce pollution and gradually transition to zero-emission operations. - Zero-Emission Technology Deployment (ZE Tech) Competition: supports the adoption of zero-emission port equipment and infrastructure, aiming to cut mobile source emissions—including criteria pollutants, air toxics, and greenhouse gases—ultimately contributing to cleaner air for communities nationwide. The IL EPA is expected to receive $2,997,998 and $92,058,008, respectively. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected 55 recipients for the $2.9 billion available from applications to the Clean Ports Program🚢 #CleanAir #USPorts #CleanAir #EPA #ReducePollution

Have you heard about the latest grants distributed by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act? The Environmental Protection Agency is awarding $4.3 billion in grants to fund projects in 30 states to reduce climate pollution. The money will go to 25 projects targeting greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electric power, commercial and residential buildings, industry, agriculture and waste and materials management. The administration has said the selected projects when combined would reduce greenhouse gas pollution by as much as 150 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) by 2030, or roughly 2 percentage points. The U.S. has pledged to slash its CO2e emissions by 50%-52% by that year.

How can governments better leverage the huge potential for Ocean Carbon Capture and help support its deployment? They can start with recognizing the technology and including it in unified regulatory frameworks. California's Assembly Bill (AB) 2572 aims to get ocean carbon dioxide removal incorporated into California's carbon capture frameworks. The bill would require the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to develop a plan to include ocean carbon dioxide removal technology and projects that it determines are environmentally safe and #sustainable into California's Carbon Capture, Removal, Utilization, and Storage Program by January 1, 2027. The bill would also require CARB to qualify environmentally safe and sustainable ocean carbon removal projects for inclusion in carbon credit programs. After earning bipartisan support and passing policy committee, AB 2572 was referred to the suspense file in appropriations. We will know this week whether the bill makes it off the suspense file (the California Assembly Committee on Appropriations hearing is scheduled for May 16th). #ocean #carbonremoval #climateaction #environmental #climatechange #carboncapture #oceantechnology #climateinnovation #innovation #california #policymaking

A new study by the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) highlights how electrifying U.S. ports could drastically reduce emissions, benefiting both the environment and surrounding disadvantaged communities. Ports in areas like New York City, Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Houston could see significant reductions in greenhouse gases and pollutants by adopting shore power systems for docked vessels: https://lnkd.in/gtedRiqr With 39 million Americans living near ports, many of whom are disproportionately impacted by emissions, these changes could improve public health and promote environmental justice. #Sustainability #PortElectrification #CleanEnergy #BipartisanInfrastructureLaw #ClimateAction #GreenEnergy #EnvironmentalJustice #GovernmentFunding #StrategicPartnershipsInc #MaritimeIndustry #PublicPrivatePartnerships #PollutionPrevention

Michigan's Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) anticipates parts of Wayne County to fail to meet the EPA's revised air quality standard for fine particulate matter (PM2.5). These updates lower the annual limit from 12 to 9 micrograms per cubic meter, a change finalized in February 2024. According to the report: 🟣 EGLE is currently reviewing data to recommend nonattainment zones, with areas around Kalamazoo and Wayne County, including Detroit, likely to be included. 🟣 Nonattainment zones trigger a series of regulatory actions designed to improve air quality, including stricter pollution controls for industries, limitations on new facility permits, and enhanced monitoring efforts. 🟣 The EPA is seeking feedback from states, tribal governments, and the public to determine which areas should be classified as "nonattainment zones". 🟣 Comments must be submitted by January 3, 2025, to be considered in shaping the engagement process.
