Dear Network, A breeding ground for disruptive innovations. Or at least that’s what Brussels bets on as it tries to open up its fast growing tech market to attract more supporters from outside, advance its innovation ecosystems, and take Europe’s economy to the next level. 4 Weeks ago, the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth – Mariya Gabriel, introduced the first-ever European Innovation Days to Silicon Valley. The idea – to showcase the diversity of the European innovation ecosystem and attract foreign investors and talent. Commissioner Gabriel was joined by a high-level delegation of over 50 EU corporates, university rectors, mayors of member-states municipalities, investors, and entrepreneurs. Together, they presented opportunities for growth under the New European Innovation Agenda. The New European Innovation Agenda was adopted in July 2022 and it aims to position Europe at the forefront of deeptech innovation. This vision can help Europe develop and bring to the market new technologies to address. Very interesting read and certainly exciting times ahead. Many thanks, Jon #brussels #tech #siliconvalley

Europe's Path to Innovation: Embracing Transformation and Overcoming Legacy Constraints In recent years, Europe has faced significant challenges in the global technological landscape. Despite its rich history of innovation and intellectual advancement, the continent has struggled to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology, often finding itself in a position of dependency. Key Observations: Historical Dependence: European countries have historically been influenced by major tech giants from other regions, particularly the U.S. This dependency has sometimes led to a reactive rather than proactive stance in technology development. Innovation Constraints: The focus on maintaining traditional systems and compliance with existing structures has sometimes hindered Europe's ability to innovate at the same pace as its competitors. This has resulted in a perception of being a follower rather than a leader in the tech space. Current Efforts: Recent initiatives aim to address these challenges by fostering innovation ecosystems, increasing investment in technology startups, and promoting digital sovereignty. However, the effectiveness of these efforts in radically transforming Europe’s position remains to be seen. The Way Forward: To truly transform and become a leader in the global tech arena, Europe needs to focus on the following: Breaking Free from Legacy Systems: Europe must move beyond traditional frameworks and embrace new, disruptive technologies that can redefine its role in the global market. Fostering a Culture of Innovation: Encouraging a culture that prioritizes creativity, risk-taking, and entrepreneurial thinking is essential for driving forward-looking innovations. Promoting Technological Independence: Developing home-grown technologies and reducing dependency on external tech giants can help Europe regain its competitive edge and ensure digital sovereignty. Collaborating Globally: Engaging in international collaborations and partnerships can enhance Europe's technological capabilities and expand its influence in global tech discussions. Europe’s journey towards technological advancement requires a paradigm shift—moving from reactive adaptation to proactive innovation. By addressing these challenges and focusing on transformative strategies, Europe can aspire to not only catch up but also lead in the global technology landscape. Let’s discuss how these changes can drive Europe’s future and contribute to a more balanced global tech ecosystem. #Innovation #Technology #Europe #DigitalSovereignty #TechLeadership #FutureOfTech #GlobalCollaboration #TechTransformation #Entrepreneurship

What #middle-#income #countries can #learn from #America’s #innovation #system by— UFUK AKCIGIT & SOMIK LALL AUGUST 19, 2024 The American model of innovation has long been the envy of the world. From the garage tinkerers of #Silicon #Valley to the #research #labs of prestigious universities, the #UnitedStates has consistently churned out groundbreaking #technologies that have reshaped industries and transformed lives. Today, the United States leads the world in the number of patents produced per person—as well as the importance of these patents. Middle-income countries looking to attain high-income status often draw inspiration from the American model. In the latest World Development Report(https://lnkd.in/griTtRKf), we highlight three lessons from the American innovation model that can be helpful for middle-income countries. ▪️First, think big: innovation today is dominated not by garage tinkerers but by large, established firms. ▪️Second, attract and nurture talent—wherever it can be found. ▪️Third, build a market for diffusing innovation. They say you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with. That’s why I value conversations with the brilliant minds from Switzerland- a country that consistently ranks among the world's most innovative countries. But high costs and strict regulations for startups make it clear: there’s room for improovment. Let’s talk about the bright side first. Switzerland is home to incredible institutions like ETH Zurich and EPFL, where ideas have a real impact on industries. Switzerland is particularly good at making linkages between academia and industry, outperforming every other country when it comes to university-industry research collaboration. These institutions, along with renowned companies in biotech, like Roche and Novartis, are making an impact far beyond Switzerland’s borders. This is all made possible by the envy-worthy collaborations between companies, universities, and the government. But the road isn’t always smooth. The cost of living and doing business here is relatively high, which makes it challenging for startups to gain traction. Regulations, while important, can slow processes, especially in fast-moving fields like tech. So where does that leave us? I believe Switzerland has a thrilling opportunity to lead the way in areas like sustainability. Startups, which could be the next big thing needs access to funding and more regulatory flexibility. What do you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts! #Switzerland #Technology

This article from Sifted explores the complex question of whether Europe can achieve true technological sovereignty. The key challenges include Europe's heavy reliance on foreign capital—particularly from U.S. and Asian investors—for scaling its tech companies. 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐄𝐮𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐩𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐬, 𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐧'𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬. Governments across Europe are making efforts to address this, with new public funds for deeptech and climate tech ventures, such as Germany’s €1bn deeptech fund. However, there are concerns about the effectiveness of relying on government funding, as decision-making can be slow and regulatory frameworks, especially around employee stock options and spinout terms, remain fragmented. In terms of innovation, Europe leads in certain sectors like energy, aerospace, and healthtech. Yet, the region's growing regulatory landscape—especially with laws like the AI Act and Digital Services Act—could hinder growth if not balanced properly. Furthermore, Europe lacks a strong tech-centric public market like NASDAQ, which makes it harder for tech firms to scale and stay competitive globally.
