Just a few quick thoughts on the UK's passing of the Rwanda bill in terms of security. Impact on the security situation of the UK: I certainly believe that whilest this bill will cause some upheaval, there is little doubt that it will reduce risk and have a net positive impact on the UK's homeland security situation. The UK government will just have to carefully manage the operational security and logistics of carrying out the action carefully. Impact on the security situation of Rwanda: The Rwandan security establishment is going to have to really be on top of this. There is plenty of room for collapse of social cohesion if they drop the ball here and given the countries history, this would not be good. Having performed a security role in Rwanda a number of times over the last few years, I have found their police to be very professional and the country to be extremely safe. Granted, my experience has been limited to Kigali and therefore may not give me a complete picture. Rwanda is an exceptionally well run country with a lot of potential. I have no doubt they will rise to the challenge of the administrative and legal issues. The challenge here however, is going to be careful surveillance and very good social integration measures. The ideological differences between the local Rwandan population and the incoming asylum seekers are substantial. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

The situation in Haiti is dire, with ongoing political turmoil and humanitarian crises plaguing the nation. As Haiti grapples with political instability and humanitarian crises, Kenya's deployment of forces raises questions about the motives behind its involvement. Critics argue that Kenya's decision is driven by political and economic interests rather than genuine humanitarian concern. Furthermore, Kenya's deployment of forces scrutiny arises over whether it reflects a pattern of Western dominance over African nations.Today's article by Kennedy Baraka explores the controversies surrounding Kenya's deployment and its implications for the situation in Haiti. Open government is essential for a thriving democracy and accountable governance. It means transparency, accessibility, and responsiveness from our leaders. With the recent passage of the Access to Information law in Zambia, our nation takes a significant step towards openness and accountability. As civil society organisations, we're committed to ensuring that this newfound access empowers Zambians to hold those in power accountable for their actions. Today, in a meeting with the British High Commissioner to Zambia, Nicholas Woolley, we discussed the socioeconomic landscape and strategies to ensure that citizens can effectively exercise their right to information. Let's continue working together towards a more transparent, accessible, and accountable government for all Zambians. #OpenGovernment #AccessToInformation #Accountability #Transparency 🇿🇲🇬🇧 Panos Institute Southern Africa (PSAf) Transparency International Zambia

🇳🇬 Considerable discrepancies exist in humanitarian responses between the northeast and northwest regions of Nigeria, despite comparable levels of humanitarian need. While northeast Nigeria has had a major humanitarian response spanning more than a decade, humanitarian efforts in the northwest have been almost entirely absent – despite higher numbers of people in the northwest facing acute food insecurity. Why? And what should be done about it at both state and local levels? 💡 HPG’s John Bryant and the Neem Foundation’s Aishat Abubakar Ibrahim and Etom Obono explore in this in-depth new paper, “Aid beyond politics and according to need: Overcoming disparities in humanitarian responses in Nigeria”. If we’re not careful, Ruto will turn Kenya into a second Congo, just like Mobutu Sese Seko did with the DRC. The time is now to oust this butcher. Ruto and Mobutu share striking similarities. Both have risen to power by exploiting the very systems they were supposed to reform, enriching themselves while the citizens suffer. Just like Mobutu drained the DRC's wealth, Ruto’s government is plundering Kenya, focusing on personal gain while the people struggle with poverty, corruption, and neglect. Ruto's rule, marked by heavy-handed tactics, intimidation, and rampant cronyism, echoes Mobutu's autocratic and corrupt regime. The longer we allow this to continue, the more entrenched the rot will become, and like Mobutu, Ruto will leave Kenya in ruins if he’s not stopped. It is imperative to act now, to prevent Kenya from falling into the same fate as Mobutu's Congo. Ruto must go before the damage becomes irreversible.

Truly excited for contributing to this process. Implementating provisions in the Constitution of a country is a continuous process. It is characterised by extremely delicate processes. However, the desire to align with the provisions of the #constitution is the true north. Promulgated in 2010, the Constitution of Kenya provides for 2 fundamental instruments in the governance landscape in #Kenya; the Bill of #Rights and #devolution. Both of the instruments reinforce each other. The National and County Governments Intergovernmental Summit (a statutory #intergovernmental body composed of the President and the 47 Governors of the Counties) held on 16th December 2024, approved the transfer of some of the functions of County Governments hitherto performed by entities of the national government. This landmark decision affirms the place of Kenya in the growing practice of #subnational and #localgovernment. “We in the developing world cannot perpetually depend on the benevolence of others and thus need to generate our own revenues. It is time this current world economic system and the inequalities that deprive us of the needed revenue to fund our economies and consigns us to this cycle of one economic crisis after another ceased.” A powerful statement by Ghana in solidarity with the Africa Group at the 2nd Session of the Ad Hoc Committee on the #UNTaxConvention.
