News on ultra-processed foods is making big waves in our industry. As the science around the health effects of ultra-processed food keeps getting developed and discussed, the impact of growing consumer awareness and the risk that it all leads to a perception shift, and then to possible rejection of legacy brands will continue to put pressure on the food industry to make changes. Luckily I can say from being 'inside' the industry that every client we work with is trying to make real changes and do right by the consumer. Same goes with the ongoing staple of Natural and Organic food entrepreneurs who constantly push the boundaries of what can & should be done. One great example is our new client Plezi, who is on a mission to help bring beverages that are simultaneously nutritious, tasty and healthy into kid's diets. CNN just summarized the latest study on the topic. What I hope does not get missed is this quote at the end of the article "𝘏𝘢𝘭𝘭’𝘴 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘪𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢 𝘯𝘦𝘸 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘳𝘢-𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘧𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘤𝘩 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘶𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘭, 𝘰𝘳 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘺." signaling that there is still more to learn: https://lnkd.in/gMKSaTxT.

It is typically used as a thickening agent in sauces, soups, and desserts due to its high starch content and neutral flavor, leading to a higher demand. The arrowroot starch market has been steadily pacing forward, responding to the growing demand for clean-label and gluten-free food products. People with dietary restrictions like gluten sensitivity and celiac disease opt for arrowroot #starch as it is naturally gluten-free. Consumers are seeking healthier alternatives to traditional wheat-based thickeners. Arrowroot fits the bill as a natural, plant-based solution that goes well with clean-eating consumer trends. EDIT: After some really interesting discussions based on this post, I've decided that the below title 'whole-foods plant-based' is misleading and inaccurate. It can be easy to focus on punchy headlines that win attention when actually quality and well informed content is much more valuable and useful. And so I'd like to thank Kesha Stickland and Michele Simon, JD, MPH for some much needed education and feedback on this topic. On looking more closely at this new range, it is clear that whilst they are undoubtedly healthier than many other meat alts, and do contain more natural ingredients, the range itself cannot be described as 'whole-foods.' I'm always happy to learn and will admit when I've made mistakes! I hope you found this update useful! BEYOND MEAT ENTERS 'WHOLE-FOODS PLANT-BASED' SPACE! 🌭🌱 US giant Beyond Meat has unveiled their 'Sun Sausage' range made from veggies, grains and pulses! These new products have likely been launched in response to increasing concerns around ultra-processed foods and consumers wanting more healthier plant-based alternatives to meat. 🙋♂️🌻 With 12g of protein per sausage and only 1g of saturated fat, the brand hopes to "raise the nutrition bar for plant-based meats." Interestingly, this new line is not intended to replicate beef, pork or poultry, but instead offer a nutritious, healthy and sustainable protein source to any meal occasion. 😁💪 I personally think this is a GREAT MOVE. We need to keep innovating within plant-based. The more colourful and exciting alternatives we can offer mainstream consumers, the better chance we have of growing this category. And if we can find delicious ways to help people eat more plants, that's got to be win for people, Planet, and animals! Are you with me?! 🤷♀️🤞 #plantbased #plantprotein #sustainablefood

What Happens to Food? … A brief recap in case you missed my previous post: There are several key interactions that happen to our food, which can influence changes in it. Thumbs up if you have been following! Continuation of the discussion on the interactions in our food. 3. Biological Interactions Biological interactions involve living organisms, such as bacteria, yeasts, and molds. These interactions are the basis for: - Fermentation: The metabolic process where microorganisms like yeast convert sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide. This is key in making bread, beer, yogurt, and cheese. - Spoilage: Unwanted microbial activity that degrades food quality, leading to spoilage. Understanding and controlling these interactions is vital for food safety and preservation. 4. Nutritional Interactions Nutritional interactions involve the availability and stability of nutrients in food. These include: - Nutrient Absorption: The presence of certain compounds can enhance or inhibit the absorption of nutrients. For example, vitamin C enhances iron absorption, while phytates in grains can inhibit it. - Fortification and Enrichment: Adding nutrients to food to improve its nutritional profile. Interactions between added nutrients and existing food components must be considered to ensure stability and bioavailability. But why do these interactions matter?👇👇 - Food Quality: Ensuring the desired taste, texture, and appearance of food products. - Shelf Life: Extending the freshness and safety of food through proper preservation techniques. - Nutritional Value: Maximizing the health benefits of food by preserving or enhancing nutrient content. - Innovation: Developing new food products and improving existing ones through scientific knowledge of these interactions. 📌what else? ⛔Be kind to share with us… I'm Motunrayo Sholabomi (Nee Buraimoh) a product developer, I talk about safety and quality of food product, follow/connect with me, I love to meet you. 🌹 #day10 #30dayswithmotunrayoB #productdeveloper #sensoryscientist #foodscientist #foodie

🌿 Distinguishing Real Food from Fake Food 🌿 Rule 1: Opt for Food That Decays Real food undergoes natural decay. For instance, leave an apple out, and it will rot—an essential sign of life. In contrast, many processed items, like burgers, may hardly change when left out, as they lack the organic life that attracts microorganisms. Rule 2: Favor Fresh, Farm-Sourced Foods True food comes directly from the farm to your table. Once it enters factories for heavy processing, it becomes a mere product. A fresh potato is genuine food, while potato chips, created in factories, are profit-driven products, not wholesome nutrition. Rule 3: Steer Clear of Heavily Marketed Foods Ever seen ads for broccoli or papaya? Likely not. Real foods don’t need flashy marketing. Instead, the focus is on processed items that can harm your health while generating profits for the industry. Disclaimer: These tips are suggestions for making healthier food choices.
