Very excited to share our latest discovery in the fascinating world of insect-specific flaviviruses (ISFs). A collaboration of Ronald van Rij lab with Sandra Junglen and Michael T. Wolfinger now published in Journal of Virology! 🦟🧬 A pan-flavivirus comparison that led us to focus on Kamiti river virus, revealing the unexpected. Insect-specific KRV produces 3’UTR-biased siRNAs without relying on subgenomic flavivirus RNA (sfRNA), challenging preconceptions. Curious to learn more? 🔬 Excited to share our latest publication in the Journal of Enterocolitis (2024, Issue 2) titled "Coexistence of Celiac and Crohn’s Disease in a Patient Presenting with Chronic Diarrhea." https://bit.ly/40t5CsH In this article, we explore the rare but important coexistence of two autoimmune conditions—Celiac Disease (CD) and Crohn’s Disease (CrD)—in a patient who presented with chronic diarrhea. Both conditions involve inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and share common environmental, genetic, and immunological factors. #CeliacDisease #CrohnsDisease #Gastroenterology #AutoimmuneDiseases #MedicalResearch #Inflammation #GutHealth #ChronicIllness #MedicalBiochemistry Image: (L) Nodularity and scalloping in the duodenum. A new manuscript published by @MemoriasJournal addresses the emergence of L. (L.) infantum as a causative agent of cutaneous disease in a visceral leishmaniasis hotspot located in Northeast Brazil. The data presented provides novel information about the presence of dermotropic L. (L.) infantum in the country and demonstrates the infectivity potential of these isolates. Parasites were isolated from cutaneous lesions of the two patients and typed as L. (L.) infantum after sequencing of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer. The dermotropic L. (L.) infantum isolates were compared in terms of growth culture patterns, metacyclogenesis and in vitro infectivity in macrophages. Leishmaniasis is a vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania protozoan parasites. More than 30 Leishmania species infect mammals; and around 22 of them are potentially pathogenic to humans. Species from subgenera Leishmania and Viannia are the main agents of human leishmaniasis and cause two clinical forms: tegumentary leishmaniasis (cutaneous and mucosal) (TL) and visceral leishmaniasis (VL).TL exhibits a wide clinical pleomorphism in humans, depending on the Leishmania species and the immunological status of host. In the Americas, L. (L.) amazonensis and L. (V.) braziliensis are responsible for most of tegumentary leishmaniasis cases, while L. (L.) infantum is the main etiological agent of visceral leishmaniasis. However, there are exceptions to these classical associations. To know more, access memorias.ioc.fiocruz.br

Gelatinous drop-like corneal dystrophy (GDLD) can be classified into different subtypes that reflect the progression of the disease. These subtypes include: 👀Band Keratopathy Type: Seen early in the disease, characterized by amyloid deposits in the subepithelial space. 👀Mulberry Type: Also seen early, with milky-white gelatinous deposits resembling mulberry plants 🍇. 👀Stromal Opacity Type: Occurs as the disease advances, involving the corneal stroma. 👀Kumquat-like Type: In advanced stages, characterized by diffuse yellow-white deposits with superficial neovascularization, resembling kumquats 🍊. #corneal #gelatinousdroplike #genetics #eyehealth
