At least 50% of wetlands are peat based. Look closely at the below image and you'll immediately notice the largest carbon storage comes from wetlands. Reducing our reliance on peat is vital to reducing our carbon emissions globally.

On a global scale biodiversity restoration action and investment for climate struck regions is a macro-steward consideration that is worthy of invester interest, cross sectoral and cross-governmental action. 🌳Landscape restoration is critical for the planet as a whole in a warming world where natural carbon sink restoration is so critical. Not to mention the billions of investment dollars flooding into the carbon markets! According to the UNDRR “Over 90% of the World's soils could become degraded by 2050.” That’s a prediction difficult to comprehend, especially in light of the investment and interest in the carbon offsets market and the proliferation of carbon as an asset class. It can only work if we have healthy soil for photosynthesis. We should be celebrating the transformative powers of soil - our natural carbon sink! ✅Healthy soil provides the largest store of terrestrial carbon. With more focus on #sustainableagriculture we can help mitigate against climate change through carbon sequestration. Conversely, in modern times continued unsustainable agriculture techniques have lead to extreme erosion, and thus the acceleration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Add to that the affects of heat, drought and consequential flooding on soil and we are in a pickle! 🌐More regulatory governance that champions data visibility in respect of biodiversity risk is urgently needed. Investment into the development of new biodiversity risk indicators would give the exposure visibility we need to better protect nature from the expansion of agricultural commodity production. 💡And as billions of dollars flow into industrial CCUS tech the gap for biodiversity financing remains. This makes no sense when we know how much carbon we need to sequester annually and the restorative power of not only forests but our oceans also. #biodiversity #landrestoration #impactinvesting #investors

So interesting that temperate grasslands are the third highest carbon sinks and cropland is the second lowest with deserts being the lowest. And the fact that the desertification is occurring mostly where we convert grasslands to cropland....

And simultaneously, we can't simply put our trust in ecosystems to fix things for us. "At least 118 countries are relying on natural carbon sinks to meet climate targets. Now, through a combination of human destruction and the climate crisis itself, some are teetering and beginning to see declines in the amount of carbon that they take in." Natural carbon sinks, like forests and wetlands, are important for reducing climate change. They absorb more carbon than they emit, helping lower CO2 levels. Soil stores almost twice as much carbon as the atmosphere and all living organisms combined. Human actions, like deforestation, upset this balance by releasing carbon back into the air. It's vital to protect and restore these ecosystems to help tackle climate change effectively.

Good to see this clear and simple overview on the potential power of the below ground carbon store. Will be good to see carbon payment schemes shift focus to supporting management of the earth system treasure.
