I'm already a big fan of SUNTORY BEVERAGE & FOOD EUROPE's new CEO Pierre DECROIX. A waffle-cutting straight talker. Why become CEO? "To make an impact." Why pursue sustainability? "Because it's the right thing to do." Pierre also talks about his vision for "sustainable, profitable growth". And he is right: sustainability needs to be seen as a driver of profitability, not an add-on. This week, I interviewed SBFE's CSO Michelle Norman. She was as driven and focussed as the CEO. Despite multiple challenges , fresh fruit and vegetables are essential not only for their health benefits and their low environmental impacts, they are also part of the solution of key European strategies to address climate change and unhealthy diet. These were the key messages of the Freshfel Annual event in Paris on 16th May in Paris . Balancing the three pillars of sustainability will be driving the sector towards fresh perspectives and growth opportunities in the coming years despite geopolitical turbulence, uncertain economic conditions and far reaching consequences of climate change. 🎉 Denmark has officially reached 100 certified B Corp companies, and we are proud of being part of this community! 🌱 Back in 2021, we were only the 30th certified B Corp in Denmark. Now the B-team has more than tripled in size. 💚 The B Corp certification is great because it takes a holistic approach to being a more responsible company - rather than certifying specifics on individual products. It is not enough to use recycled plastic on some of your packaging or that one of your products is organic. To achieve the B Corp certification the company as a whole must excel in 5 categories: Environment, Community, Workers, Governance and Customers. Every three years you have to get recertified - which means that we are working on our recertification as we speak. This is a great opportunity to take a critical look at your business and ask yourself a lot of hard and important questions. There's plenty of great chocolate in the world (current favorite: Läderach). But there's not enough producers who will spend money to make sure their product hits all the ESG notes. So here's to Dengo Chocolates. The Brazil-based company sources cocoa from an especially scenic part of Bahia outside Trancoso. (Maybe you've heard of it; it's where Lewis Hamilton spent New Years Eve.) They pay their cocoa producers up to 200% over market price, in one of the poorest parts of the region. And they are scrupulous about their sourcing, from making sure that no cocoa plantings result in Amazon deforestation to requiring that all the children who live on the farms go to school. What's more, Dengo chocolate is delicious and singular, with options like banana-cashew and coconut-strip decorated bars. Agree with you John O'Keeffe that partnerships are crucial to make accelerated change and impact for sustainability. Partnerships are hard and I loved sharing ideas and views on how to build effective collaborations at Diageo’s APAC Sustainability Academy. My key learnings through my experience of coaching teams to work better together: 🌱 Define the common purpose of the Partnership. What can you only achieve together rather than apart? Focus here. 🥅 Define clear goals and milestones. Celebrate milestones. 🤝 Co-create culture, values and working agreements for the new Partnership. Agree on when you need to collaborate and when you don’t, how you will make decisions, skillfully have conflict and keep communication open and transparent. This keeps a conscious focus on the relationships and builds trust. 👥 Establish clear roles and responsibilities. Be realistic and transparent of the power dynamics of all partners. At Booking.com we’ve established a meaningful partnership with the UN World Tourism Organisation to launch free online courses on more sustainable practices for tourism and hospitality which provides a comprehensive and accessible guide towards a more sustainable approach. 🌍 Earlier this year, we conducted a primary research survey with 600 legal and sustainability leaders from global consumer goods, food, beverage, and retail organisations. The takeaway? Sustainability isn’t just a nice-to-have anymore—it’s a must-have. With that, we're seeing first hand how leaders and their legal teams are working hard to weave sustainability into the fabric of their strategies. For my connections in the sector, our event on the 26th in London will explore how companies can juggle short-term compliance with long-term success.
