Adolescent medicine, also known as adolescent and young adult medicine, is a medical subspecialty that focuses on care of patients who are in the adolescent period of development. This period begins at puberty and lasts until growth has stopped at which time adulthood begins. The psychosocial period of adolescence is extended both by an earlier start, as the onset of puberty begins earlier, and a later end, as patients require more years of education or training before they reach economic independence from the parents. The Dangerous Dismissal: When Medical Ignorance Blocks Early Intervention As someone deeply invested in neurodevelopmental support, I am compelled to speak about a critical issue: the harmful culture of medical dismissiveness. To every healthcare professional reading this: 🚫 Stop saying "Your child will be fine" 🚫 Stop using anecdotal family stories as medical advice ✅ START listening ✅ START referring to specialized professionals A personal encounter at a recent conference broke my heart. A father shared his journey of repeatedly being told his son would "grow out of it" - only to later learn that 90% of brain development occurs by age five. Those missed critical years can never be reclaimed. The truth is stark: Neurodevelopmental or Developmental Pediatricians, Pediatric neurologists, and some specialities of Psychology are THE experts in diagnosis. (Kindly include others that I might have missed in the comment section) Parents' instincts are valid Early intervention is not just important - it's CRUCIAL Healthcare isn't about dismissing concerns. It's about: Compassionate listening Professional referrals Empowering families with knowledge To Parents: Trust your instincts. To Professionals: Expand your understanding. We can do better.
