A Day in the Life of a Mountain Leader Ever wondered what a day in the life of a mountain leader looks like? Here's a peek behind the scenes of my life in the mountains. When a request for a trek comes in, the adventure begins long before we hit the trail. I create a proposal, carefully tailored to the needs of the group. I design a beautiful route that matches their skill level—or sometimes even two or three options if we have a larger group of different abilities. Next comes route scouting, often with my trusty companion, Woodstock. We check the paths, make sure they’re safe, and adjust as needed. I book a cozy restaurant in a scenic location for that perfect après-adventure meal. I sometimes arrange transportation to and from the mountain for a seamless experience. To make it even more memorable, I plan teambuilding exercises—ways to strengthen bonds while enjoying the great outdoors. The day before (or sometimes even the morning of), I walk the route again, making sure the snow conditions are just right—whether it’s a matter of too much or too little snow. I adapt the route as necessary to make sure there are no surprises. All of this planning is what makes every day as a guide different and challenging, but incredibly rewarding. Guiding isn’t just about leading people up a mountain; it’s about crafting an experience, one that helps people connect with nature and with each other. Working across 2 time zones, clocking in 80 hours a week, and having no holiday for 6 months has definitely been a challenge. Caring for my specially-abled brother, while being away from my wife and son for several days a week, has its own set of difficulties. What might seem like just a bike race is actually a masterclass in teamwork and strategic planning. In the Tour, each team has a distinct strategy. Some aim to win the Tour overall (yellow jersey), while others focus on different objectives like winning the most sprints (green jersey) or being the fastest climber (polka dot jersey). In addition to this overall strategy, every rider knows their specific role within the team, whether it’s leading a stage, supporting the team leader, or conserving energy for future stages. This intricate coordination and clarity of purpose is what leads to success. The successful execution of business strategy is just like in the Tour.
