"Volunteering creates a deep connection and reminds us that our individual success is intertwined with collective success." That’s how I concluded a column I was invited to write for Forbes Uruguay—a column I never imagined I’d write, and reading it still reminds me of how challenging and surreal this process has been. 😊 As president of DESEM Junior Achievement, I’m fortunate to share a bit of my thoughts, so here are some ideas I’d like to pass along (hope you like them!). 📝 When asked to write this column, I reflected on a challenge we face as an organization, and one I believe we face as a society: the responsibility to give back. 🌎 At 15, I had the chance to participate in some entrepreneurial education programs by DESEM. 🚀 Thanks to the financial support 💰 of many companies and, more importantly, the time ⏰ and dedication 💪 of people in those companies, I experienced a “click” that opened my eyes to the opportunities I could have in the future. I’m convinced that who I am today as a leader and entrepreneur at Qualabs is greatly because of that first opportunity JA gave me. 🙌 So, I come with a reflection and a call to action. 🔔 Of course, nonprofits need funding 💵 to operate, and we need companies’ support. This support must be rooted in a genuine sense of giving back to society. It must have meaning and purpose for the company supporting it. Here's the trick I’ve learned over the years: when we give, we receive much more than what we gave 🎁. This lesson has been reinforced through volunteering and through seeing the positive impact on my own team 👥 when they participate in these activities. Asheesh Advani talks about the “three T’s”: Time ⏳, Talent 🧠 & Treasury 💵. Money alone won’t achieve this. We also need supporting companies teams involvement. Because it’s through this involvement that we can genuinely make a difference. 🌱 And believe me, giving seems like a “selfish” act—because we end up receiving much more than we give. 💖 💡 So here is my humble message for today. I urge my colleagues in Uruguay 🇺🇾 to consider this. Young people from underserved communities need to see the real world 🌍, to connect with experienced professionals who can show them what’s possible. 🌠 Young people need access to opportunities to discover their potential. Let’s democratize access to these opportunities so that no kid or teenager is left behind due to lack of resources or connections. Let’s build a future where everyone has the chance to be part of the success. 🤝💼🚀
