Check out this freshly released housing study. It’s about Tennessee but the issues discussed in it are relevant everywhere. Most of America is facing the issue of housing affordability and many Americans are questioning whether the American dream is still within reach. Saddest quote in the study - “Everyone needs a home—but in the current housing market, many Tennesseans might never be able to afford one.” I uploaded the 139 page report for your information from the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations (TACIR). Some of the solutions in the study are controversial and very debatable but certainly worthy of discussion. It’s hard to admit, but Austin’s housing crisis is turning the city into a place many cannot live in. The heart of Austin is its people, but it's driving out the workers, teachers, and families who built this city. Every day, I see the toll that skyrocketing housing costs are taking on the people who make this city run. It affects the teachers, service workers, creatives, and builders who are this city's backbone.  Yet, too many are forced to move farther away, sacrificing time, community, and stability to make ends meet. The solution isn’t simple, but it starts with a commitment to affordable housing that addresses the real needs of our city’s residents. One of our current projects is a development where 50% of the units are affordable housing. We’re also working on a safe house project for women in crisis, which will give them a place to start over with dignity and safety. This fight for affordable housing is personal for me. We can’t continue to push the people who build and serve our city out of it. Inclusion and affordability should be central to how we build our cities. It answers the fear of what neighborhoods would look like with more housing. Spoiler: they will look almost the same as how we used to build neighborhoods. The report talks about Junius Heights and other older neighborhoods that already has this kind of Missing Middle Housing. We can build these kinds of neighborhoods all across Dallas, along with adding more housing in those older neighborhoods. It also goes into the many benefits for both homeowners and the city as a whole. And it makes clear that it's not the only way we should add housing but is a first look that will likely be what works for most existing single-family homes. For us to make these changes a reality, we need to show up April 18th

📢🏠 Spotlight on Richmond’s housing crisis: As co-director of the Wilder School RVA Eviction Lab at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Ben Teresa's research reveals that our city has one of the highest eviction rates in the nation. In 2023, Richmond landlords filed 12,816 eviction cases, executing 2,849 — a 22% execution rate. The RVA Eviction Lab analyzes eviction data and advocates for tenant protections through projects like the Virginia Evictors Catalog. It provides critical insights to help shape fair housing policies and support vulnerable renters. With Richmond's long-declared housing crisis, Dr. Teresa’s data-driven approach demonstrates the need for local investment in affordable housing and stronger renter protections. The Dallas Morning News reports that the average home in the DFW region costs 4.4 times the region's median household income. Area residents need to make more than $116,000 to buy a home, according to a June study from Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, and the average rent for a D-FW apartment at the end of June was $1,472. These housing costs are out of reach for many, increasing the demand for affordable housing options at a breakneck pace. That’s why we remain committed to forging partnerships with private developers to construct new affordable housing and mixed income developments, such as The Oaks senior living community. This community, developed in partnership with Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS), celebrated its grand opening in November of 2023. DHA redeveloped the former Brooks Manor site in Dallas into a 260-unit, mixed-income community. Producing new housing has to be a "shared responsibility," said @New York City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams at the @NYU Furman Center's Policy Breakfast in February. New York City official are hopeful that two new packages of laws—the City Council’s Fair Housing Framework and Mayor Eric Adams’ proposed City of Yes for Housing Opportunity plan—will work in tandem to fairly and equitably produce new housing across the city and ensure every single neighborhood contributes to solving the city’s acute housing crisis. Yesterday we hosted our CIE Community Quarterly convening and learned a lot about the state of housing in Colorado along with the historical inequities and disparities that still impede us today. Thank you, Peter LiFari, for a wonderful presentation. Your insights and advocacy of affordable housing being something each citizen should enjoy. A couple key statements from Peter that really resonated were... 💡 “The future of housing is in the sky.“ (Based on density, environmental, social and community needs.) 💡 "Do we want MORE homeless or MORE housing?” 🤔   Housing values were a key takeaway from our discussion. Below are some things to consider: 🏠 Housing stability is national security 🏠 Housing is Civil Rights 🏠 Everyone needs a home to thrive 🏠 Housing abundance drives housing affordability 🏠 Housing is a continuum 🏠 Homebuilders are not the enemy 🏠 Filtering is real 🏠 The Market will not produce homes < 60%AMI without subsidy 🏠 Inclusionary Zoning alone will not solve your affordability challenges 🏠 Rent Control is a False Idol #inclusiveeconomy

The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) and partners are conducting a study of housing needs in Tennessee and are seeking your experiences and opinions. Your input will be used to develop two plans: 1. The 2025 – 2029 Consolidated Plan, which will outline goals and priorities for an anticipated $60 million in annual federal funding for housing and infrastructure from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). 2.
