It's time to be honest. I don't love equity conferences. Here's a few reasons why: ❌ Horizontal relationship building: I never have enough time to get to know folks just their business cards. Remember: we all have something to share, something to teach. Collect wisdom. ❌ Stuck at introductory learning: Plenty of workshops pique my interest, yet I always leave wanting more regardless of the "level" of familiarity. I end up stalking the presenter, not good. ❌ White culture timing: I get it, scheduling and logistics. But, can we honor the time and space needed to build relationships, and learn deeply together? Readjust our relationship with time. ❌ The effin' cost: Just because it's not polite to cuss all the time. Registration, lodging, airfare, car, now food too, all the while not paying presenters (And charging presenters to register? wtf.) ❌ Sensory overload: Not all of us love being in rooms with 3,000 people all the time. I miss the quiet, I miss the calm. ❌ Stay indoors. Ugh. So many closed doors. Can we breathe air together? Sit under a tree? Learning doesn't need to happen inside. Be in the community. Literally. Ok, that's a longer list than I planned and I didn't even talk about the environmental impact. But do you see? That's NOT equity in action. That's just talking about equity. I should get to the point before I get irritated: We're action-ing. It's a new world and we're in charge, so why not? As the Head Architect of Aspirations of The Equity Consortium, asking revolutionary questions like, "What if...?" activates my title. Therefore, we introduce "A New World Three Day Listening Circle" in Seattle, Washington (Sept 18-20, 2024). We have 22 of 30 spots remaining (to the Trailblazer Eight, thank you for the vote of confidence to keep us going!) so if you haven't, now is a time good as any to check it out, O Fellow Revolutionary. Meanwhile, click on and pop out our "D.E.I. isn't dead" mini-journey below for a taste of the future (Spoiler: It's about language). That's Equity.
