What are the 3-5 core values that everyone in the organization should agree to uphold? As we approach a new fiscal year, it might be appropriate to revisit or create core organizational values. Core values: 1. Provide guidance and direction: Vaues state what the organization stands for and the principles it upholds, guiding employees in day-to-day actions and decisions. 2. Help with recruitment and hiring: Clearly defined core values attract like-minded individuals who resonate with the organization's mission and principles. 3. Act as a framework for decision making: When faced with tough choices or dilemmas, employees and board members can refer to the core values to make decisions that are aligned with the organization's beliefs and priorities. This week, we discuss the importance of building & strengthening relationships among board members. Having a board meeting once per month does not guarantee your board members know each other. You need to purposefully create opportunities for your board to grow closer together. This can be as simple as one question at the beginning of each board meeting that allows each board member to share about themselves. 7 Resolutions for Exceptional Social Profit leaders in 2025 1) Stay curious about your own organization. What is working? What areas are moving forward? What barriers are your colleagues encountering? What isn’t working? Write it down. 2) Treat your upcoming fiscal year-end as a leverage point and not a finish line – look beyond March 31st or June 30th – to set up the rest of the calendar year 3) Call 2 donors per week (at least) & send one handwritten card – know what’s on the minds of your donors, and you have access to the social profit CEOs magic (sort of) wand 4) Ask yourself the 4 questions of effective board engagement – What do you need the board to know? What do you need your board to start doing? What seeds do you need to plant (and what advice do you need?) Is there something you need the board to stop doing? 5) Name and slay the zombie issues in your organization – what issues keep rising up from the dead to get in the way of strategy and execution (Every organization has at least one with the board or leadership team 6) Reduce the number of KPIs or measures of success for your organization and your leadership team – what is most important for the year ahead. Everything else is clutter and a barrier to success 7) Ensure you have CEO specific goals that are separate from the overall organizational goals – be clear on how you are going to add the most value to your mission and your team and set goals for yourself (no more than two) Have a listen and let me know which resolution resonates most for you.

"The best board members smell like sweat.," says Derik Timmerman It’s easy to generate ideas during board meetings, but the real value comes from rolling up your sleeves and leading the execution. Overloading the Executive Director with more tasks isn’t productive. The most effective board members take responsibility for their suggestions, driving initiatives forward instead of passing the workload to others. If you propose it, own it. Take the lead. Non-profit leaders: 2025 will be the year when not having a podcast will start to feel like a strange exception. My prediction? The amount of podcast listeners will grow exponentially, and many organizations are going to scramble to catch up. It's important not to get caught unprepared. You'll want to start thinking and planning now. Making a podcast that will stand out, break through the noise, and connect with your ideal audience requires careful forethought and planning. And right now, when you're working on budgets and planning for next year, is the time to start doing that work. If you want help with that, reach out. I love to help non-profit organizations work through their identity, ideal audience, and goals to create a podcast that not only connects with their audience on its own but serves as an upstream resource that drives their organizational messaging. I've still have capacity to work with a couple more folks this year, but you'll need to move fast to get on the schedule. Let's go!
