Last Saturday marks my 3rd trip preparation with my students to Laos. 🇱🇦 It’s the annual YEP (Youth Expedition Project) a programme of which we adopted from National Youth Council Singapore As we navigated through some tension in forming our team charter especially on how does a team define what punctuality is, we had some interesting thought processes come up. Facilitating those moments, I took the opportunity to reframe their thinking by redefining what YEP stands for. From my multiple trip experiences, I have come to realise that YEP indeed stands for “You Expect Problems” while that doesn’t sound very positive it does put one in a more realistic state of awareness and readiness. Examples: - the host partners miscommunicates the schedule and that messes your lesson plans (you expect problems) - you are on your way to the train station, and the local governing agency decides to block the roads for a marathon (you expect problems) - the airline decides to cancel on you on the last minute and you can’t get to your connecting flight back home so you end up having to stay an extra day. (you expect problems) You can do you very best to prevent these through careful planning but nothing is full proof. Problems do happen but in the midst of it, you can stay calm and focus on what to do in that moment because you expect something might happen and you are ready for it. So here’s the plot twist. Days later, my Laotian host apologised and said that they could no longer host us due to some scheduling mishap. You. Expect. Problems. 🤣 So what did I do? I quickly contacted another host partner explained my situation and now this plane is making its way to Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭 Always an excitement! Am thankful the students are taking this change positively and it’s so apt that in that moment of facilitation they were prepared to face one of the biggest change. #experientiallearning #servicelearning #studentdevelopment

We present an overview of accommodations for our international students at SPC and the video to show our dormitory. **First Phase**: Students begin in our dormitory, priced from just over $200 weekly. It’s designed for newcomers, offering a supportive, English-speaking environment to foster friendships and improve language skills. Facilities include meals and recreational amenities, setting a solid foundation for English immersion. **Second Phase**: We transition students to homestay environments, starting at $300 weekly, to deepen their language skills and cultural understanding in a family setting, with all homes vetted for safety and proximity to the school. **Third Phase**: Post initial adaptation, students move to more independent living, such as share houses, from $350 weekly, while engaging in part-time work. This phase consolidates English proficiency and life skills. We also offer a transfer to our Brisbane School for broader employment opportunities. Starting directly from the third phase is discouraged due to the lack of foundational English skills. Incorporating earlier phases ensures a more effective and safer transition into Australian life and work environments. With living costs rising, it’s vital for students to make the most of their study abroad investment. Our structured phases ensure a balanced approach to learning, cultural immersion, and personal development, essential for a rewarding experience in Australia.
