Assistant Manager (Student Development) at Singapore Polytechnic

Last Saturday marks my 3rd trip preparation with my students to Laos. 🇱🇦 It’s the annual YEP (Youth Expedition Project) a programme of which we adopted from National Youth Council Singapore As we navigated through some tension in forming our team charter especially on how does a team define what punctuality is, we had some interesting thought processes come up. Facilitating those moments, I took the opportunity to reframe their thinking by redefining what YEP stands for. From my multiple trip experiences, I have come to realise that YEP indeed stands for “You Expect Problems” while that doesn’t sound very positive it does put one in a more realistic state of awareness and readiness. Examples: - the host partners miscommunicates the schedule and that messes your lesson plans (you expect problems) - you are on your way to the train station, and the local governing agency decides to block the roads for a marathon (you expect problems) - the airline decides to cancel on you on the last minute and you can’t get to your connecting flight back home so you end up having to stay an extra day. (you expect problems) You can do you very best to prevent these through careful planning but nothing is full proof. Problems do happen but in the midst of it, you can stay calm and focus on what to do in that moment because you expect something might happen and you are ready for it. So here’s the plot twist. Days later, my Laotian host apologised and said that they could no longer host us due to some scheduling mishap. You. Expect. Problems. 🤣 So what did I do? I quickly contacted another host partner explained my situation and now this plane is making its way to Chiang Mai, Thailand 🇹🇭 Always an excitement! Am thankful the students are taking this change positively and it’s so apt that in that moment of facilitation they were prepared to face one of the biggest change. #experientiallearning #servicelearning #studentdevelopment
