My mom is dying from pancreatic cancer. She’s only 65. She’s my best friend outside my wife and daughter. I’m in the hospital with her right now (she’s sleeping) as I write this. She’s been in the hospital for almost the last two months. I’m sharing this because today is World Pancreatic Cancer Day (WPCD). I’ve posted WPCD awareness content in the past but never thought I’d be writing something like this from such a deeply personal lens. Tumors of the pancreas are extremely difficult to diagnose because the organ sits deep in the abdomen and is hidden behind other organs. Because of this, pancreatic cancer is often found too late when it becomes incurable/inoperable. It is estimated that the average T1-stage pancreatic cancer progresses to T4-stage in just over 1 year. The primary reason for the high mortality rate associated with pancreatic cancer is its tendency to remain asymptomatic in its early stages. The estimated number of Canadians that will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2024 is 7,100 — unfortunately, 90% of people who receive this diagnosis will die.  There are still many unknowns about what causes pancreatic cancer and how to prevent it, however, there are some known and possible risks that could be a factor in developing pancreatic cancer: 🟣 Tobacco 🟣 Obesity 🟣 Diabetes 🟣 Family history of pancreatic cancer 🟣 Certain genetic conditions 🟣 Chronic pancreatitis 🟣 Alcohol The following factors have been linked with pancreatic cancer, but there is not enough evidence to show they are known risks. More research is needed to clarify the role of these factors for pancreatic cancer: 🟣 Physical inactivity 🟣 Eating processed meats 🟣 Exposures to chemicals at work 🟣 Helicobacter pylori 🟣 Hepatitis B virus (HBV) 🟣 Gum disease 🟣 Cystic fibrosis 🟣 Cirrhosis of the liver Risk factors are characteristics, habits, or environmental exposures that have been shown to increase the likelihood of developing a disease. While some risk factors are modifiable, some others are not. Not everyone who has one or more risk factors for pancreatic cancer will develop the disease. If you or someone you know is experiencing one or more of the following symptoms, I urge you to contact a doctor immediately and reference pancreatic cancer: 🟣 Pain in the upper abdomen or back 🟣 Jaundice 🟣 Changes in stool color 🟣 Loss of appetite and unintended weight loss 🟣 Diabetes 🟣 Nausea and vomiting/digestive issues 🟣 Fatigue 🟣 Overall skin itch 🟣 Diarrhea and constipation This is one of those faith testing experiences in life. Sorry to hear this. It’s an awful disease. I lost my mom to it when she was only 36 and my step mom died of the same thing. 💔🙏🏻

I feel every moment of this for you and your mom. My father passed from this horrible disease last year and he was 80. You are exactly where you need to be right now, doing what you should do, by supporting her. Hug her, talk with her, get her whatever she feels like having. My father had strangest of cravings but we went with it. We engaged in deep and meaningful conversations that people take for granted. 💜 Stay strong.

Sorry to hear that you are going through this as many of us have in the past. We all hope that one day there would be more awareness and earlier detection so people in the future do not have deal with this horrific disease. I lost my mother to Pancreatic Cancer on January 1, 2012, where she was 1 month from turning 63 and was diagnosed only 2.5 years before her passing. I will continue to keep pushing for more awareness and keep you, your mother and the family in my thoughts and prayers.

Justin, I am so sorry to hear this. I lost my mother when she was only 66 to the very same disease. It is heartbreaking to see a young fit person suffer and lose their life to a disease that can be treated if only we could find a way to diagnose it sooner. There is hope and our moms don’t have to die in vain. Having seen the research firsthand, the work that pancreatic Cancer North America is sponsoring at MD Anderson Cancer Center is truly groundbreaking. This cancer needs support and your post is doing that by bringing awareness to it. I am wishing your mother comfort. And you are all in my thoughts.

Thank you for sharing. I lost my dad, who was also my best friend, to pancreatic cancer 3 years ago and can relate to all you’re going through. Sending you and your family lots of strength. 🙏🏻

I’m truly sorry to hear this, Justin. My father passed from pancreatic cancer last year. We tried a bunch of natural treatments and if we had more time, who knows. (The hospital dropped the ball in notifying him of his diagnosis.) One was baking soda taken in a vegetable tablet with a spoonful of black strap molasses. Within days the pressure in his back was gone, it had bothered him for months. The other is NEUMI GLOBAL Swish, it’s amazing stuff and I use it on occasion. Prayers for you and your family. 🙏🏻

Justin, I am deeply sorry to hear about your mother. Please know that you and your family are in my thoughts during this difficult time. I can empathize with your loss, as I lost my best friend—my father—on Thanksgiving Day in 2021 after a 13-month battle with pancreatic cancer. This disease has touched so many lives, and through my volunteer work with PanCan, I’ve met others who share similar experiences. We all continue to hope and pray that ongoing research and increased awareness will lead to breakthroughs in early detection, giving families more time with their loved ones. 💟 💜
