Justin Arenstein’s Post

Is being ignored by the global AI giants such a bad thing? I argued at the UN last week that there are benefits to the fact that AI platforms have so far failed to train their bots and LLMs on African languages and data. The 'lag' offers us a small window of opportunity to secure our IP, to avoid the kinds of copyright battles we're seeing in the US + EU. If we're savvy, we can negotiate a more equitable data economy in the Majority World. I also called on the UN Information Committee to help secure access to 'compute' resources/systems for African researchers, so we can leap-frog the need to build multi-billion dollar hardware platforms & instead invest our funds into people/skills. Here's the video of our UN Information Committee session, with responses from UN Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications Melissa Fleming, and UN representatives from Canada, Costa Rica & Latvia: https://bit.ly/4agOPdl

Your perspective on the overlooked potential of AI giants in Africa presents a compelling opportunity for strategic advantage in intellectual property and data sovereignty. Leveraging this 'lag' could indeed empower African nations to negotiate fairer terms in the global data economy, fostering economic empowerment and technological sovereignty. However, it prompts consideration of the broader implications for AI development and accessibility. How do you envision navigating the delicate balance between capitalizing on this window of opportunity and advocating for inclusive AI development that benefits all stakeholders, particularly in terms of ensuring equitable access to resources and expertise across diverse regions and communities?
