Watching yesterday's American presidential debate and reflecting on September 11th, 23 years ago, I wonder if we have grown wiser. Regardless of which candidate one may support, it saddens me to see two grown adults engaging in mudslinging while competing for the leadership of one of the most influential countries in the world. So much depends on good leadership. I hesitate to share the debate with my 13-year-old daughter. I’ve raised her to value respect, understanding, and setting loving boundaries for herself and the other. I strive to convey loving speech and deep listening, though I don’t always succeed—I am fallible too. At home, we often talk about the sanctity and equality of all life on Earth. We honor the traditions of being good guests in the house of Mother Earth and strive to be good hosts to those visiting our homes. One might say these are fairly conservative values, yet they fly on the wings of compassion and wisdom—carried by the wind of as much insight as we can possibly muster. How much compassion and wisdom do these aspiring American leaders express?
