Automation is great because it eliminates tedious tasks, but it also brings another great advantage... ...it highlights the unnecessary complexity we bring to processes, sometimes. To automate things, you need concrete rules*. To have concrete rules, you need to think things through. When you think things through, you find a moment to realize how silly you're being 🫠 ...and you re-design for simplicity. ⚡️ That's why experimental design is so important, before rushing into building or deploying something. ⚡️ *you also need clean data, but that's a whole other topic. #revops

Automation is great until it sucks. It's a slippery slope. Once we get a taste of how amazing automation can be, it's easy to want to automate EVERYTHING. But over-automation can be just as bad as no automation. (And sometimes worse). A clear sign you've over-automated is when simple tasks are now unnecessarily complicated. Instead of saving you time, your automations create more headaches: ❌ That 2-minute task now requires 6 steps, 3 integrations, and a dashboard login. ❌ One error breaks the entire chain, and you spend an hour troubleshooting. ❌ You can't remember the last time you did it manually—and if the automation goes down, you’d be lost. Remember, automation should be about simplifying, not complicating. If you’re spending more time managing your automations than actually getting things done, it’s time to take a step back. Streamline, simplify, and don’t let the tech run you. P.S. Are you an over-automator or an under automator?

Stop Thinking About Automation – Start Doing It Over the past few weeks, I've shared how automation can save you time and boost productivity. But talk only goes so far. It's time to take action. If you're still stuck in manual processes, you're leaving productivity and job satisfaction on the table. I know everyone is out there pitching AI, NoCode, and a host of other wonder tools, but the fact remains that automation is more than a buzzword. From factory looms to steam engines, automation has eliminated manual labor. Software automation does the same thing for digital tasks. Challenge yourself today: Pick one repetitive task and find a way to automate it. Need help getting started? Reach out. Let’s turn those ideas into results. As always life is too short to waste on work you hate!

The benefit of automation is usually expressed in time saved but this may be an overly simplistic approach. In the attached article I have added some methods and derived formulas that can be used to make a more robust conclusion. Also, how to compare two or more potential tasks ripe for automation and which one will bear the best fruit. In deriving one formula, I noticed it was the same as the standard economic break-even formula which was an interesting find.

Here's an automation that congregates an article on Feedly, sends the article to Perplexity, rewrites the article, sends the rewritten article to ElevenLabs, generates a voiceover of the rewritten article then uploads the rewritten article and the ElevenLabs voiceover to a folder using Make.
