Happy Friday, everyone! I've spoken to different people in my network this week about interviewing, job hunting, and volunteering, and it's made me realize that you must be intentional and advocate for yourself during this process. When you volunteer, especially for an organization related to your field, it gives you insight, whether you are new to the corporate world or a seasoned professional, into how organizations work and whether you want to continue to volunteer for that organization. Understand that time is money, whether you're being paid or volunteering. Volunteering is a two-way street: you must be able to market yourself, network effectively, make intentional connections, and add to your skillset, whether that's in technical or soft skills. Essentially, there must be a benefit to you even though you are not being compensated monetarily, and you must feel comfortable around those individuals. If that is not the case, move on! Because you're not being paid to be there!! My next point: when you are interviewing, that is most definitely your time. When I hear companies are doing double-digit interviews with candidates, I think, "Is this job really worth your time?" Now, if you've received a job offer after 5+ rounds, that's fantastic; however, if a company cannot properly screen and get the right candidate after 2-3 interviews, they are wasting what? YOUR TIME! Final point: during ANY interview process, if anyone is making you feel uncomfortable or being biased, you have every right to end that interview immediately and professionally. It's no longer about the role, and it gives you a clear indication of that individual and that's not a place or person you want to work for. Happy volunteering, and Job Hunting. Sometimes, the job hunt feels like you're climbing a mountain, blindfolded. That was me, until I stumbled upon an incredible program called Start It Right, run by DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society This wasn’t just another seminar. It was a guiding light, generously supported by RBC and other Sponsors showing me the way not only to find a job but to find my place in Canada. The wisdom shared in Start It Right went beyond the basics. Yes, it covered the essentials of job searching like how to make your resume stand out or ace an interview. But it was more about building a life here, understanding the community, and realizing that job hunting is also about discovering where you belong. In the world of job hunting,there was a young job seeker named Emily. She joined LinkedIn, hoping to find her dream job. Excitedly, she sent out connection requests to everyone she could find. While doing this I'm curious to know what career or workfloor advice has stuck with you, good and bad. Or something you wish someone had told you earlier on in your career. This example is very communications/public relations specific, but as someone who has a tendency to overthink it really helped when one of my managers at VMG reminded me that "it's PR not ER". If you’re currently out of work and job hunting, it can be all consuming and can make a real dent in your confidence. A lot of people put everything else in their life on hold and can become fixated on job hunting, refreshing seek (and other job websites) and living on linked in 24/7. If you have been made redundant you may feel like you are in a situation that is out your control. Although the redundancy may have been, you can now take control of how you manage this situation and the actions that you take from here. Regardless of how you got to this situation, you are in control of how you respond to it. There are always steps we can take, and things we can do to improve what we are dealing with, in all areas. Over the next few posts I will be sharing some things to consider whilst going through this challenging process. (Part 1) 1. This is temporary, it won’t be forever. This period is a short period in the bigger picture of your life and your career. Don’t allow this to knock your confidence, this doesn’t define you. 2. If you can, keep busy with things that keep you feeling like you are using your brain. There are many free resources available online. Research any free online courses you can do, watch youtube tutorials on software or methodologies in your field. Sign up to free trials and get learning something new, even listening to podcasts can have a huge impact. 3. Create some kind of structure and routine in your day. Start time blocking activities. An example of a timeblock schedule for a jobseeker; 8-9 respond to any emails, 9-10 utilise linked in and other networking/social tools, 10-1 apply for any jobs and chase people up. Then spend the afternoon doing things that make you feel good, exercise, reading, learning, projects around the house…whatever gives you some enjoyment. Although the priority is obviously to find a new role, it isn’t healthy or helpful for job hunting to consume your whole day.
