The energy transition brings challenges and opposition towards a sustainable future. In a landmark ruling, the High Court of South Africa has overturned the government’s plans to add 1,500 MW of new coal-fired power to the national grid. - The case was brought by the African Climate Alliance (ACA), the Vukani Environmental Justice Movement in Action (VEM), and the Groundwork Trust, represented by the Centre for Environmental Rights (CER). The applicants argued that the government's decisions violated several sections of the constitution. - Judge van der Westhuizen ruled that the respondents could not provide any evidence to show that they considered the effect that coal-fired power will have on the environment and health of the nation, particularly that of children. - The first and second respondents are the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) and the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA). - Minister Gwede Mantashe and NERSA ordered to pay the applicants’ legal fees. - This case sets a precedent for future legal challenges against environmentally harmful projects and emphasises the need for transparent decision-making processes. According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), air pollution from coal-fired power stations kills more than 2,200 South Africans every year and causes thousands of cases of bronchitis and asthma in adults and children annually. #CancelCoal #GroundWorkSA #TheElectricMission on #emissions

A recent article by The Times focused on the critical examination of carbon markets and their impact on African land rights. The article highlights the controversial dynamics where well-intentioned environmental efforts intersect with complex socio-economic issues. The central figure, referred to as the "saviour of carbon markets," faces scrutiny over how these projects affect local communities, raising significant questions about land rights and ethical investment practices. This piece highlights a broader discussion about the ethics of environmental projects and their socio-economic impacts, emphasising the need for a more inclusive approach that considers the rights and livelihoods of local populations. As businesses and governments push towards sustainability, it's crucial to ensure that these initiatives are environmentally and socially responsible. Key takeaways include the importance of transparency, community involvement, and ethical practices in implementing green projects. These aspects are vital for the success and acceptance of such projects and for maintaining the integrity and trust in global sustainability efforts. https://lnkd.in/dF3gU-HV For professionals and businesses in the sustainability sector, this serves as a reminder to scrutinise their projects' broader impacts and foster collaborations that respect and uplift local communities. 🔗 Read more on The Times: Saviour of carbon markets faces questions over African land rights #Sustainability #EthicalInvestment #CarbonMarkets #LandRights #SocialImpact #GreenEnergy #EnvironmentalEthics #CommunityEngagement #OceanBlocks

Last month, Verra held a two-day capacity-building workshop in Benin that brought together government representatives, international organizations, and NGOs to align on key issues related to voluntary and compliance markets. The workshop focused on the benefits of certifying projects with Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) Program, and it included overviews of the process of obtaining Article 6 labels on the Verra Registry, Verra’s new cookstove methodology, and the recently released REDD methodology. Attendees discussed the growing international demand for carbon credits, the relevant reporting requirements under the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement, and the specifics of projects’ registry and reporting obligations. Additionally, the event emphasized the commitments outlined in Benin’s Nationally Determined Contributions. Verra is planning further capacity-building activities around the world as part of its Memoranda of Understanding with various national and subnational government organizations.
