The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) was recently adopted by the European Parliament and this means the idea of using reusable packaging will become more popular. One of the core points within this legislation is that ‘final distributors of beverages and take-away food offer 10% of products in a reusable packaging format by 2030.’ It is due to these new rules that two Burger King restaurants in Finland will be partaking in a new pilot project. This will involve these restaurants using 100% bio-based reusable cups from Sulapac Ltd. It's #EarthDay and the theme for 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics" 🌎 One of the most obvious places to tackle sustainability in our day-to-day lives is food. Global food wastage stands at 1.3 billion tonnes annually, with Ireland alone accounting for 753,000 tonnes. A significant factor in this wastage is misinterpretation of date labels like 'best before', 'sell by', and 'use by' among consumers, particularly impacting Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. Beyond the food wastage, the prevalent use of non-biodegradable plastic packaging poses a severe environmental threat, with these plastics being a dominant contributor to global waste. The #NationalChallengeFund project, BioFreshPack, is an innovative, biodegradable food packaging system that integrates a natural freshness indicator. Derived primarily from agricultural waste, this packaging not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers real-time freshness checks, targeting the issue of premature disposal of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. The average EU citizen generates around 190kg of packaging waste each year?👀 The new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is a game-changer for sustainability in Europe! The PPWR aims to cut packaging waste by 5% by 2030, with goals of 10% by 2035 and 15% by 2040. Fast-food restaurants will have to shift to reusable packaging for at least 10% of their products, and customers can bring their own containers without penalty. By 2030, plastic sachets in the Horeca sector and mini bottles in hotels will be history. Plus, governments are tasked with ensuring 90% collection of plastic bottles and metal drinks containers by 2029, supported by deposit-return systems.
