It's #EarthDay and the theme for 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics" 🌎 One of the most obvious places to tackle sustainability in our day-to-day lives is food. Global food wastage stands at 1.3 billion tonnes annually, with Ireland alone accounting for 753,000 tonnes. A significant factor in this wastage is misinterpretation of date labels like 'best before', 'sell by', and 'use by' among consumers, particularly impacting Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. Beyond the food wastage, the prevalent use of non-biodegradable plastic packaging poses a severe environmental threat, with these plastics being a dominant contributor to global waste. The #NationalChallengeFund project, BioFreshPack, is an innovative, biodegradable food packaging system that integrates a natural freshness indicator. Derived primarily from agricultural waste, this packaging not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers real-time freshness checks, targeting the issue of premature disposal of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products.
