It's #EarthDay and the theme for 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics" 🌎 One of the most obvious places to tackle sustainability in our day-to-day lives is food. Global food wastage stands at 1.3 billion tonnes annually, with Ireland alone accounting for 753,000 tonnes. A significant factor in this wastage is misinterpretation of date labels like 'best before', 'sell by', and 'use by' among consumers, particularly impacting Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. Beyond the food wastage, the prevalent use of non-biodegradable plastic packaging poses a severe environmental threat, with these plastics being a dominant contributor to global waste. The #NationalChallengeFund project, BioFreshPack, is an innovative, biodegradable food packaging system that integrates a natural freshness indicator. Derived primarily from agricultural waste, this packaging not only promotes environmental sustainability but also offers real-time freshness checks, targeting the issue of premature disposal of Ready-to-Eat (RTE) products. EU to ban packaging for fruits and vegetables The European Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to enhance food safety and promote a circular economy by making packaging in the EU safer and more sustainable. The PPWR requires all packaging to be recyclable, minimize harmful substances, reduce unnecessary packaging, boost recycled content, and improve collection and recycling. However, a revised proposal focuses on banning plastic packaging for fresh fruit and vegetables, rather than all single-use packaging, which has sparked criticism from industry leaders. They argue that the ban unfairly targets the fresh produce industry, may increase food waste, restrict access to healthy food, and have minimal impact on overall recycling rates. The agreement also sets packaging reduction targets and requires EU countries to reduce plastic packaging waste. Additionally, it mandates recyclability criteria for all packaging and introduces minimum recycled content targets for plastic packaging. Rapporteur Frédérique Ries emphasized the importance of all sectors and stakeholders working together to reduce excess packaging. #gogreen#

[PPWR 🥤] In Europe, food packaging waste represents about two thirds of packaging waste. As an NGO dedicated to ocean protection, we closely monitored the recent agreement reached by the institutions regarding the packaging and packaging waste regulation (PPWR), and here's our take: 🌍 The EU's move towards reducing packaging waste is commendable, but there are critical areas where stronger action is needed to truly make a difference. The packaging industry's growth is alarming, with an expected rise to 92 million tonnes in 2030 and a staggering 107 million tonnes in 2040. 🔄 While we appreciate steps taken, such as banning single-use plastic packaging on fruits, vegetables, and indoor dining, the shift to single-use paper isn't the ultimate solution. Let's challenge industries to seize this opportunity for sustainable choices and embrace reuse! 📊 On the other side, imposing waste prevention targets for all packaging placed in the single market, and establish reuse targets for certain packaging segments, including beverages and transport packaging is good news. 🚫 PFAS (substances with specific chemical properties) ban in food contact materials is a positive step, safeguarding both our health and marine ecosystems. This long-awaited demand marks a 🌟 huge victory 🌟! 🌊 It has been decided to encourage HORECA to accept customers' reusable cups/lunchboxes by 2027. However, a stronger push is needed for HORECA to offer reusable packaging options by 2028. We need incentives to drive investments in the right direction and stop relying only on the consumer. 🔄 Our call: Strengthen re-use targets, limit exemptions, and ban unnecessary packaging. This is a pivotal moment for a true circular economy, and we urge the EU to lead the way towards sustainable choices. Learn more 🔗 https://lnkd.in/esMiTWUF 📣 Share your thoughts! Predictable Waste is Often Avoidable. Back in 2019 we lamented the greenwashing that compostables and biodegradable food and beverage packaging were. Since then the situation has worsened with PFAS being identified in some of these items. They were never actually better than single use plastics. Now they are much worse.
