Experiential learning at Campbell University integrates hands-on, practical experiences with academic coursework to provide students with a well-rounded education. 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗵 𝗛𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 Major: Biology Pre-Physical Therapy Experience: Ecology and Culture in Hawaii 𝓗𝓸𝔀 𝓭𝓲𝓭 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓯𝓲𝓷𝓭 𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝓪𝓫𝓸𝓾𝓽 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓼 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮? As a part of the honors program, one of the requirements is to study abroad, so I always knew about the various faculty-led study abroad programs. Being a biology student and taking classes with Dr. Havran is what led me to choose this program. 𝓗𝓸𝔀 𝓱𝓪𝓼 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓽𝓲𝓶𝓮 𝓪𝓽 𝓒𝓪𝓶𝓹𝓫𝓮𝓵𝓵 𝓹𝓻𝓮𝓹𝓪𝓻𝓮𝓭 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓯𝓸𝓻 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓼 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮? Campbell’s interdisciplinary approach to education helped prepare me for this experience. While in Hawaii, I learned about so much more than Hawaiian ecology and culture, and I think my time at Campbell prepared me to be receptive of that. 𝓦𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓭𝓲𝓭 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓷 𝓯𝓻𝓸𝓶 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻 𝓲𝓷𝓽𝓮𝓻𝓷𝓼𝓱𝓲𝓹? I learned about the many native plants and animals in Hawaii, what makes them different from other organisms, and how locals are trying to preserve them. Additionally, I learned how the different people groups living in Hawaii and their respective customs come together to define Hawaiian culture. 𝓗𝓸𝔀 𝓭𝓲𝓭 𝔂𝓸𝓾 𝓰𝓻𝓸𝔀 𝓭𝓾𝓻𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓽𝓱𝓲𝓼 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓮𝓻𝓲𝓮𝓷𝓬𝓮? As I am working on my PT school applications, I am thankful that this opportunity exposed me to other cultures, unlike the ones I’m used to in NC. The ability to relate to and understand different cultures will help me be a better physical therapist as I enter my professional career. The year was 2013, and I was graduating in Marine Biology - Universidade do Algarve. This degree was not an obvious choice for me. Actually, up until high school, I believed I was going to be... a hairdresser 💇♀️ (Crazy, right? Story for another post) Choosing a path was really tough. Society kept pushing me towards traditional careers with 'guaranteed' jobs after college, and marine biology was NOT one of them. 🌊🐠 My gut told me that as long as I loved what I was learning, I'd be fine... and guess what? That's exactly what happened! 💪✨ I've realized that traditional career paths aren't for me. It's not about a lack of commitment; it's about my constant desire for new lessons and experiences. I may be far from Marine Biology now, but without it, I wouldn't have volunteered for AIMM. That experience led me to jobs in tourism, which eventually gave me the skills to break into tech at Hostelworld. It's not about the destination - it's about the journey. 🤸♀️ What about you? The year was 2011, and I did my first volunteer internship with AIMM – Marine Environment Research Association. It was so cool that I ended up spending all my summer breaks during college with them. This experience offered me a 360º view of working in science, conservation, and investigation. Here are the top experiences and skills I gained from it: ✨ Knowledge about cetacean species available along the Portuguese mainland coastline. ✨ Discovering how to identify various species and understand their behavior and social structures. ✨ Enhancing my knowledge through theoretical lectures and hands-on fieldwork training led by their experienced researchers. ✨ Data collection and treatment. ✨ Writing and presenting scientific posters at the European Cetacean Society (ECS) annual conference. ✨ Developing meaningful connections with the team and other volunteers from different countries. ✨ English - either by engaging with other interns, writing scientific content, or conducting research... the main language for this experience was English. Through this experience, I connected with the companies where I secured my first paid jobs. Dare To Dream Big: My IISMA Journey that makes my dream come true 13 years old me may not believe of what she had right now. Studying abroad has always been on my mind since I was in junior high school, but I always think it will never come true because its not common in my surrounding. One night when I was freshman year, my sister sent me a DM about Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards . I took a quick look at it but didn’t consider applying for it because I already buried my dream of studying abroad because life brought me far from my dream. Fast forward to when I was in my fourth semester, I got messages that said those who want to apply to IISMA ought to compile their data on campus.I felt like my 13-year-old dream echoing in my mind. I decided to contact my senior who wants to apply for IISMA this year. I asked a bunch of questions to find the answer for not applying for this opportunity since my fear of being failed haunts me. But what I got was the opposite, she encouraged me to maximize this opportunity. Well, after that I prepared all the requirements, looking for my purpose then wrote my essays but the hardest thing was encourage myself that I could do this. The preparation phase came to an end, the final announcement was only about to come. I didn’t put my hopes up on this, but again I put this in God’s hand for whatever will be, I ’ll accept. On the final announcement day, at the dining table in my home, I opened the announcement by myself in case the result was going south I could take my time alone, and tell my family later when my self was toned down. Unexpectedly, God gave me this opportunity to grow and meet my dream at Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto majoring in Water Management which align with my interest on environmental issues. My IISMA journey has taught me a lot of things. This lesson led me to transform my mind. Not only be blessed by studying abroad but on meantime many things upgrading my mindset, here’s what I learned during that time: -        Never hesitate to ask for help or information from others, as an introvert sometimes seeking help from others feels so heavy but we do not live only by ourselves so get some help will benefit us and we can build communication and network by communicating with others. -         Don’t stop yourself, as a student I always want to do my best in everything I do because of this I can be the best version of myself and always prepared to jump into every opportunity that might be given. -        Clarify your purpose, having the right purpose or goals will help you to boost your energy because when you know your purpose, this purpose will drive your life so that you will never feel lost. My journey in the maritime industry started KZN Sharks Board, where I gained valuable experience as a seaman for a year. Additionally, don’t hesitate to seek mentorship from experienced professionals who can offer guidance and support along the way. Lastly, believe in yourself and your ability to overcome challenges.
