In low-income communities, adolescent girls often have limited opportunities, with many ending up married before the age of 20. A 2019 global estimate from UNICEF counts a staggering 23 girls under 18 married every minute; in Malaysia alone, at least 1,500 children are married every year, with a high likelihood of many more going unrecorded. Not only does child marriage rob girls of their childhood, they are also less likely to pursue personal growth, resulting in stunted emotional and psychological development while perpetuating cyclical poverty. At RYTHM, we seek to help these at-risk girls from low income backgrounds gain autonomy, discover possibility, and pursue the future they deserve through our long-running Maharani Programme, in line with the United Nations SDGs of #EducationForAll and #GenderEquality. Discover how the Maharani Programme drives societal progress and ignites the potential of young women in this insightful interview aired on Malaysia's Astro AWANI channel with our Chairperson, Datin Sri Umayal Eswaran: https://lnkd.in/gsvQF7PF #RiseWithRYTHM #InternationalWomensDay

My Personal Reflection on 16 Days of Activisim in my community. As a social development practitioner, I witness daily the resilience and courage of marginalized women and girls in Ghana, especially the Kayayei women (Head Potters) who carry not just physical loads but also the weight of inequality, violence, and neglect. These 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence remind me why I do what I do. Every story I hear of a young girl forced into a life of hardship, every mother struggling to protect her children from abuse, fuels my determination to create a better world. Violence against women and girls is not just an issue, it is a crisis. For a kayayei, who often face exploitation, harassment, and physical danger while trying to earn a meager living, the risks are even higher. They deserve more than survival, they deserve dignity, safety, and opportunity. This year at ILMIHA, we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying their voices, advocating for their rights, and creating pathways to education, healthcare, and safe working environments. Real change begins with us: challenging harmful norms, holding systems accountable, and showing compassion in our actions. Let us use these 16 days to reflect, advocate, and act, every single day! Patriarchal customs have historically stifled women's potential for economic participation and leadership opportunities in Nepal. Nevertheless, the Chhatre Deurali Social Entrepreneur Women’s Cooperative, supported by Heifer International Nepal, is turning the tide. Through this initiative, women like Shanti Tamang and her close-knit circle of "sisters" are challenging the status quo to seize financial independence, master agricultural skills and gender trainings by starting agribusinesses and making a profit. Read on to see how strength in sisterhood is reshaping their destinies this #IWD2024. → https://buff.ly/4fa1jXP #investinwomen #inspireinclusion

#KWIBOHORA: Celebrating Rwanda's 30 Years of Liberation Today, #Rwanda marks 30 years of liberation. Early this morning, people gathered at the newly inaugurated Stade Amahoro to witness a military parade, a spectacle not seen in five years. Rwanda's journey since the 1994 genocide has been transformative. The economy has grown significantly with the GDP extremely increasing. Healthcare advancements have improved life expectancy from 29 years in 1994 to 69 years in 2023. Education initiatives have raised the literacy rate to 73%, and gender equality in schools has significantly improved. The post-genocide era has fostered an inclusive society free from discrimination. The Rwandan identity, "UmunyaRwanda," symbolizes unity and pride. The youth, making up 60% of the population, are leading the way in innovation and entrepreneurship. The #RPF Inkotanyi's role in Rwanda's liberation is immense, giving Rwandans a country to be proud of. Their sacrifices have laid the foundation for a nation that dreams big and achieves great heights. I am impressed by how investment in security has attracted more opportunities for both Rwandans and foreigners. The growth of industries, entrepreneurship, and industrialization has significantly reduced Rwanda's dependency on neighboring countries for basic commodities. Rwanda's 30 years of liberation celebrate not just the past but also the promise of a brighter future. We are one. We are renewed. We are liberated. We are Rwanda.
