Only 26.7% of adults with a learning disability are employed yet 86% of unemployed people with a learning disability want a paid job. (Mencap). Do you have a learning disability? Do you know someone who does? Do you work with someone who does? Learning disability is not always seen, understood or appreciated in the people we work with and employ, and that results in a waste of talent. Created by Mencap and running 17 – 23 June 2024, Learning Disability Week focuses on challenging the barriers people with a learning disability face and highlighting the value they bring to society. This year’s theme is “Do you see me?” which is all about being seen, heard and valued. Beyond this dedicated week, organisations in hospitality such as The Crumbs Project, Royal Academy of Culinary Arts BaxterStorey and many others work on an ongoing basis with people living with a learning disability, with a focus on training and skills development in the workplace. Did you know that this week is Learning Disability Week ❓️ It is a week where people show what life is like if you have a learning disability. This year the theme is “Do you see me?” “Do you see me?” is about people with a learning disability being seen, heard and valued. Being valued means that people are respected by others, and their views and feelings are listened to. We want Learning Disability Week to be about: ✅️Celebrating the things that people with a learning disability do. ✅️Challenging the barriers that people with a learning disability face. Here at The Robin Centre we try to remove as many barriers as we can that stops an adult from doing something. The person is the focus of everything we do, as well as everything we intend to do at our day centre. Our purpose is to change people’s lives by empowering them with the skills they need to live as fulfilling a life as they possibly can. We do this by providing a safe, supportive, fun and friendly day centre environment to learn new skills which will change their lives. Our philosophy is that members will learn much more if they take more enjoyment from their learning. Our team work hard to compile and develop fun and educational activities which allows them to develop these vital skills without knowing that the activity was skill based. We’ve found this approach to be very successful and prevents the member from viewing The Robin Centre as a school or a place of work. Instead, they view the centre as a safe, fun and friendly place to be. Let's tell everybody about Learning Disability Week 2024! #learningdisabilityweek #learningdisabilities #removingbarriers #creatingawareness #robincentre

Learning Disability week 2024 - Day 2 This years theme for learning disability week is 'Do you see me'. An important part of being seen and valued in a world where people feel included, is being understood. Too often the barriers people with learning disabilities face is a lack of understanding from professionals from Social Care or Education, and a lack of values driven and person-centered understanding for a person. Everyone, regardless of ability, just wants to live their best life. The barriers people with a learning disability face come from a lack of understanding and people that think they know better. Value judgments are made because a person has a learning disability. Perhaps around what they can and can't do, or the type of support they need. Assumptions are made along with attribution errors. All too often carers and professionals make value judgments such as, 'They could do it yesterday, there is nothing wrong with them' 'They are doing it for attention' 'They are putting it on' 'He can do it if he tries' 'She understand everything' If you find yourself making these attribution errors, or you find your team using language like this, you may need to consider further training around learning disability, values, person-centered approach, and Active Support. Understanding a person with a learning disability involves including them in decisions about their life, listening, and taking time to understand. People with a learning disability do not want things done to them or for them, they want to be active partners in making key decisions for their life. The Core Capabilities Framework and the mandatory Oliver McGowan learning disability training are all important steps to improving understanding. 'Do you understand me?' is the key question for parents/carers, professionals, Education, Social Care, and Commissioning. Understanding is central to a values driven approach to learning disability and allowing people to thrive and be seen in their community. #learningdisability #intellectualdisability #qualityoflife #qualityofcare #positivebehavioursupport #pbs #activesupport

Learning Disability Week 2024 (Monday 17 – Sunday 23 June 2024). This year’s theme is “Do you see me?” which is all about being seen, heard and valued. It is when we make sure the world hears what life is like if you have a learning disability. Recent research and statistics about learning disability issues; . -In 2017/18 only 6% of adults with a learning disability known to their local authority were in paid employment in England (NHS Digital, 2018), compared to 76% of people aged 16 - 64 in the general population (ONS, 2019). -Stigma and discrimination can become internalized in people with a learning disability resulting in ‘self-stigma’. This is associated with higher levels of psychological distress and lower quality of life (Ali et al., 2015; Pelleboer-Gunnink et al., 2019). As a society we must challenge the barriers people with a learning disability face and celebrate the things people with a learning disability bring. Head to Mencap to join the celebration.
