I’m reading Who by Geoff Smart and Randy Street so that I can improve our hiring strategy. My takeaways so far: 1. Knowing what to do isn’t enough if you aren’t contributing to the outcome. For ex: knowing how to compile financials vs delivering financials on time to clients. Can’t have one without the other. Both are important to the role. 2. To some extent, you should always be recruiting. You never know when an A player will come along. This is something I have to get better at. I tend to only talk about hiring or working with us when we’re looking for someone new. This has not served me well. 3. Stop settling for B and C players. While it may seem like a role is needed immediately, investing the time up front screen and properly gather data on candidates will help weed out those who are not A players. We’re hiring for a crucial team member and the principles in this book have been very helpful. My hope is that through our refined process we’re able to find a strong Senior Accountant to support our client delivery process.
